Guitar Repair Vise

About This Item

The luthier's favorite vise is even easier to use, thanks to custom modifications: bearing-smooth operation, fast crank handwheel, and urethane/hardwood swivel jaws.

Custom modifications make it the best!
Don't mistake our vise for one of the many copycats! We've customized our Guitar Repair Vise to give it bearing-smooth operation that you won't find elsewhere. Turn the fast-crank handwheel and you'll immediately feel the difference.

Customized four ways:
1. Fast-crank handwheel with removable handle
2. Roller bearings for fast smooth opening/closing
3. Protective urethane surfaces on custom hardwood jaws
4. Nylon-core adjustable tension nuts control 360° jaw rotation

A good vise is the central hub of your workshop. Every repair or building job benefits from a solid, secure vise, and if it's actually a pleasure to use that's all the better!

Our Guitar Repair Vise is 32 pounds of steel that rotates full-circle to position the work for comfortable access. Each inch-thick hardwood jaw rotates too, with forgiving urethane surfaces to hold instruments of any shape/any size. This vise holds the tapered angles of a neck securely without needing any shims. Nylon-core adjustment nuts set the tension on the rotating jaws, so you can let them spin loosely or hold their angle. The vise jaws open to a maximum of 6" (15.24cm).

We've built in a roller bearing so the vise opens and adjusts smoothly - and added a crank handle to make it speedy. (The handle's conveniently removable, too.)

The sturdy base can be installed under your workbench for 8" vise height, or on top for 9-3/4" height. The threaded mounting rod and large wingnut mount the vise quickly on any benchtop up to 4-1/2" thick. Use a 11/16" bit to make a clean hole through your bench.

Add a pad under the jaws or tempt fate

I lusted over this vice and setup for years and finally got it on sale. Beware the vice loosening and your neck getting some nasty dents when it hits the crossbar. Other than that, no complaints.

Great vise for all types of guitar work. I'm limited on space, so I mounted the vice on a Black & Decker Workmate 225 bench.

I absolutely love this vise. I didn't realize how much I would use it until I got one. It works great for my guitar building and repairs and equally well for working on my firearms.

Extremely Handy

Where has this been all my life? If you don’t have one of these, buy it now! This vise is heavy, and handy. Attach it to a separate piece of wood and clamp it to your bench. It becomes a semi portable extra pair of hands. I put mine on a corner of my bench utilizing an existing bench dog hole. It works perfect. I have not attached the small handle because I don’t need it. I leave one side static and the other loose for odd shaped items. Once hand tight they stay right where you need it. I put a small amount of tri-flow oil on the crank and the threads and it operates very smoothly. I’m hand carving a set of drawer handles at the moment. This really is a perfect vise.

Excellent vise for carving spoons!!

By

I saw a Youtube clip on spoon carving and the person suggested a guitar vise to hold the blank while carving. It was good advice. I'm using this vise to hold my spoon blank and it is holding it firmly while i carve. It is easy to swivel when I need to work on different sides and holds the blank very well.

This is not so much a review for the device itself but of the customer service dept. They were incredibly efficient, professional and friendly in facilitating a replacement for my defective vise. I've been ordering from Stewmac for 20+ years and its rare to get a bad product but when it does happen you can rest assured that they will make it right.

I should have bought one sooner!

Works as advertised, holds firmly in all positions.
I thought there was supposed to be a bearing on the screw by the handwheel.
That being said, I’m glad I purchased this.

Versatile and Easy

This vise can hold the piece I'm working on in almost any imaginable position to optimize access and visibility. The vise opens wide enough to grasp a dreadnought body at the tail block or head block if needed. Glad I finally bought one.
