StewMac Screamer Pedal Kit

About This Item

Build the pedal that redefined overdrive
From SRV to Trey Anastasio to John Petrucci, this game-changing Tube Screamer-style overdrive will turn your timid tube amp into the tone monster you know it can be.

What else can be said about the TS-808 Ibanez Tube Screamer? With simple controls and the mythical JRC-4558D chip, this pedal pushes your amp into great sounding overdrive, WITHOUT completely changing your tone. It's like the amp you love, but better, and at a volume that won't get you evicted.

Don't buy your next pedal—build it!
We love the original TS-808 circuit, so why mess with perfection? We include the same JRC-4558D chip that gives this pedal the perfect mix of grit and transparency. We improved the little things to make this pedal even better: we added true bypass, reduced the noise, and made sure all of the components were top quality from switch to jack.

With controls for volume, drive, and tone we've kept the simplicity that's made this pedal a classic. Just twist the knobs and this pedal will bring out the raunchy tones hidden in your amp. Because the circuit is so transparent, it will sound different depending on which amp you plug it into.

It's more than just a schematic
We include everything you need to build your new pedal:

  • Top quality components from resistors to switch
  • Road-worthy rugged metal enclosure with all holes pre-drilled
  • Bare or powder coated white finish
  • 3PDT breakout board for low noise
  • Input, output, and power jacks rear mounted for easy cable routing
  • True bypass switch
  • Custom printed labels

Easy! Download your instructions
We've made these instructions ready to download now. You can zoom in on every solder joint and resistor value to make sure your build is perfect from start to finish. With these step-by-step instructions, full color illustrations, and complete wiring guide you'll build a pedal you'll enjoy for a lifetime. Be proud every time you step on the custom pedal that you built.

Make your pedal your way
It's never been easier to have an inspiring sounding and looking pedal. We include labels for all of the knobs for a professional look. Paint your own raw metal enclosure or choose a powder coated enclosure that is ready to put on your board now.

Take the first step to customize your sound.

First Pedal Build Ever!

This was my first ever build, and my really my first time ever soldering anything. It definitely took me a little extra time to complete than it would take an experienced builder, but the instructions were solid and i got it all figured out in a few hours. I got some new knobs for it, and decided to paint my own tube screamer (vs. using the sticker). So far, I love it.

Screamer pedal rocks!

I put the Screamer pedal kit together last night. I took my time and even double checked all the resistors with a meter to make sure I didn't mix up the red, brown and orange color bands. :) Old eyes! I also used a magnifying bench light to make sure my solder joints were good. That helps a lot! Instructions were good and easy to follow. Had to drill out the in/out jacks holes for the sockets to fit. No big deal. It was just the paint I think really. All good.
It fired up first kick which made me very happy! Then i played SRV style blues for hours and didn't want to stop! This pedal is awesome! Highly recommended. Now I'm looking for the next project! Well done Stewmac! As usual!

Great sound slight QC issue

Pedal sounds excellent!
The instructions are amazing. Very informative about electronics and pedals in general.
Only issue was my predrilled box had the input and output holes too small. Had to widen them with a dremel.
Also one of the nuts for one of the switches was too small. Luckily I had an extra kicking around.
But the pedal rules.

Incredible pedal, even better service!

Stewmac rocks! Having finished their 5E3 tweed deluxe kit, I figured the tube screamer would be an easy weekend job to tackle. So, I was confused and a bit bummed when the pedal didn't work the first go 'round. I shot an email into the customer service to see if they could shed any light on the situation, and was blown away with how helpful and interested they were. Providing documents and different test points to help me troubleshoot from home using a basic multimeter. Tommy was awesome, thanks again man! This pedal screams and I am so satisfied!

Novice Experience with Screamer Pedal Kit Assembly

The directions were some of the best I have seen for various kits. Even with no soldering experience, the directions get you going and keep you out of trouble with tips. The holes in the end of the frame were too small to fit the phono plug receivers. I just drilled both of them out slightly and the problem was fixed. Everything else went ok. There are 3 tiny, brass screws for the knobs that can easily be lost and should be in a plastic bag by themselves.

Way fun project for those learning to solder

I was a little intimidated by soldering an entire circuit board so I wasn't sure what to expect with this. I was not very good at soldering to be honest. However this was a lot more fun than I imagined it would be and I definitely am more confident in my soldering skills after completing the project. Only took me a few hours to solder everything up and the instructions were amazing. It actually worked when I was done and sounds great. Id recommend this even if you are a messy solder'er

Also one of the knobs was missing an internal screw to tighten it, but I emailed support and they sent me a new one right away. So 10/10 on the support

Great Project

Great product and easy to follow directions. The hardest part of the build was identifying and sorting the resistors. A great hack is to take a photo on your phone so you can zoom in to see the markings. Take your time and double check your polarity before soldering. The build took about 4 hours and sounds awesome. Highly recommended.

You'll want to know how to solder...

I don't think any major pedal company needs to worry about any competition coming from me. I have very little exp. with soldering. Having more of that would have greatly helped me put this thing together correctly. I spent some time putting all the pieces in the right place but in the end it didn't work at all. That being said I had a lot of fun putting it together, the directions couldn't be easier to follow, and I learned a valuable lesson to let the pros do the building. Again, a lot of fun to do. Just didn't work out in my case. Totally user error.
