StewMac Screamer Pedal Kit

About This Item

Build the pedal that redefined overdrive
From SRV to Trey Anastasio to John Petrucci, this game-changing Tube Screamer-style overdrive will turn your timid tube amp into the tone monster you know it can be.

What else can be said about the TS-808 Ibanez Tube Screamer? With simple controls and the mythical JRC-4558D chip, this pedal pushes your amp into great sounding overdrive, WITHOUT completely changing your tone. It's like the amp you love, but better, and at a volume that won't get you evicted.

Don't buy your next pedal—build it!
We love the original TS-808 circuit, so why mess with perfection? We include the same JRC-4558D chip that gives this pedal the perfect mix of grit and transparency. We improved the little things to make this pedal even better: we added true bypass, reduced the noise, and made sure all of the components were top quality from switch to jack.

With controls for volume, drive, and tone we've kept the simplicity that's made this pedal a classic. Just twist the knobs and this pedal will bring out the raunchy tones hidden in your amp. Because the circuit is so transparent, it will sound different depending on which amp you plug it into.

It's more than just a schematic
We include everything you need to build your new pedal:

  • Top quality components from resistors to switch
  • Road-worthy rugged metal enclosure with all holes pre-drilled
  • Bare or powder coated white finish
  • 3PDT breakout board for low noise
  • Input, output, and power jacks rear mounted for easy cable routing
  • True bypass switch
  • Custom printed labels

Easy! Download your instructions
We've made these instructions ready to download now. You can zoom in on every solder joint and resistor value to make sure your build is perfect from start to finish. With these step-by-step instructions, full color illustrations, and complete wiring guide you'll build a pedal you'll enjoy for a lifetime. Be proud every time you step on the custom pedal that you built.

Make your pedal your way
It's never been easier to have an inspiring sounding and looking pedal. We include labels for all of the knobs for a professional look. Paint your own raw metal enclosure or choose a powder coated enclosure that is ready to put on your board now.

Take the first step to customize your sound.

Pedal for my jam sessions

By

Verified Buyer

I bought this Screamer Pedal Kit as a project that I could use in my monthly jam sessions with my friends in an effort to improve my guitar sounds. Must admit, the parts were small but manageable. All parts were in the kit but came up short on wire due to my error in measuring, The step by step instruction were super good quality. Finished it, plugged it in and it worked great. I am very pleased with my Screamer. Can't wait to try it out on our next jam session....

Killer Kit

The thing I like about these kits is that they work and sound great. After you've assembled them you have something that is a working pedal you can be proud of and be able to tell everyone that you put it together. This is a great sounding pedal and the quality is there.

Not being a pro at this kind of stuff I ran into a hitch with the soldering but Tommy S. was there in support to make sure I got my pedal working. It works and it sounds great! Thank you Tommy and StewMac! I definitely recommend giving this a try. It was well worth the effort and now my favorite pedal.

Another awesome product

I have built other pedal kits in the past, but this Stew Mac kit is outstanding.
The online directions are well written and illustrated, and provide instructions, tips, and explanations that just make all the difference.
From proper soldering technique to component orientation to wiring the jacks, led and power connector, this is a very well thought out project.
I tested the value of each resistor as a double check, and I was very surprised at how close the actual values were. No +or- 20% values here. Obviously quality was a priority.
I will say that I bought the StewMac circuit board holder, and that made things immensely easier.
As sound goes, it really seems like a souped-up tube screamer, as described.
It doesn't add distortion really, just allows you to push the pre amp tubes more to get that sweeter tube sound. I'm still exploring what it can do, and different amps handle it in their own way, but so far it's staying out to play.
And did I mention the stickers? Another nice touch!
If you are looking for some classic Tube screamer sounds and/or just a fun project, don't hesitate.

Pedal kit

Hi,
Before beginning to work on this kit, you'll need:
a soldering unit with a Very Thin tip because the holes are very near each other on the(very small PCB)
a good magnifier(x10 mini) to see your work clearely
making a picture and amplifying them with a photocopy to have a good wiew of the writings to avoid mistakes.
D'ont tin the wires before soldering,so they will enter freely in the(thin)holes
The instructions are clear and precises, follow them, only the soldering of the LED is a little bit "rock'n 'roll" but it does the job.
D'ont inverse the stickers in and out(as I do) and you'll respire more quietly! during testing.
Otherwise, good pedal it sounds.JJ(70y old )I hope theese some tips will help you!

Great dad & daughter project!

My daughter and I enjoyed this project. She is 16 and has an interest in electronics and engineering. Most project/kits we've tried were made for younger children and were poor quality.
The StewMac kit was wonderful! High quality components, clear instructions, excellent sound and just plain fun! Hopefully I'll get another on for Father's Day :)

Killer kit with BIG tone!!

I bought this pedal so I could say I built a tubescreamer, and man, this is honestly one of the best sounding TS variant pedals I have ever heard, and I built it!! I also think it's really fun to swap out the different IC's and see how the sound changes. This kit didn't take hardly anytime to put together, and it was an extremely rewarding build and experience.

Awesome!

I assembled this pedal this weekend, taking a couple of hours to complete. I was an electronics nerd many years ago but haven't done any real builds in decades. The instructions were absolutely amazing and provided rich details and step by step guidelines. I took my time, double checked everything, and to my pleasant surprise the pedal worked perfectly the first time I tested it. Some tips and observations:

1. Read the instructions carefully. I almost missed a few things because I skimmed over them.
2. Make sure you have a digital multimeter. There is no way I would have selected the right resistors had I not checked them, and rechecked them with a meter. (The red and brown color codes are so close!)
3. Have the tools they recommend, including a fine-tipped soldering iron, a circuit board holder, and a magnifying glass. These parts are much smaller than I remember when I was younger, and some of the soldering areas are tight.
4. I had to drill the holes for the input/output jack to make them slightly larger so the jacks would mount.
5. The decals don't quite line up properly. The radius doesn't match the radius of the knobs, and in one case the decal ended up under the nut of the output jack, which caused the decal to tear while tightening the nut. The instructions have you adding decals in the first step, but if I was to do it again I'd probably wait until I was completely done and position accordingly.
6. The LED light was a little difficult to maneuver into position when putting everything together at the end.
7. A surprise bonus was finding out that you can switch out the op-amp ICfor a Klon Centaur style. I may experiment with that sometime.

Overall I'm very satisfied with this. It looks and sounds great. While I don't need any more pedals, I may order another one just for the fun of it!

First pedal build... couldn’t have gone better

This kit is amazing. Not only is it fun to build the pedal sounds great when you’re done. The instructions are detailed, visual and easy to follow. On top of that, they explain each part and it’s function. So you don’t just build the set, you learn the purpose of every component.

Once you’re done, you’re left with a killer pedal, a better understanding of a piece of gear and you had a good time along the way.

Such a great experience.

Overall Great kit

By

Verified Buyer

You'll want to own a multimeter and know how to solder before attempting this kit.

The good
-Instructions were great
-assembly is mostly straightforward and easy
-sounds exactly as it should
-Overall very fun to build

My only real beef with this kid was that the LED was white and the stickers didn't line up / fit like they should have. the input / output / power jacks are all very close together and you have to shorten the stickers from "INPUT JACK" to just "INPUT" to make it fit. also the radius on the tone/drive/level controls was much tighter than where they needed to go.

All in all I enjoyed the kit and had fun. Sounds great.

Great pedal. Fun to build.

This was my first time building a pedal or even soldering anything other than cables. Took about 2 hours, not including painting. Instructions were clear. I had a little trouble getting it to work, but StewMac tech support helped me out. The pedal sounds great and is easy to use. I'm very happy with it. My only complaint is that I wish they included a schematic to help you understand what is going on inside. A few tips: make sure all the jacks and pots fit before you have to paint. I had to drill a couple out. And if you are using the stickers, make sure you take into account how much space the knobs and jack nuts will cover. Looking forward to doing another one.
