Guitar Screw Rescue Kit

About This Item

An extractor and plug cutter that's small enough for guitar screws! A StewMac exclusive: you won't find a similar set in this small size anywhere else.

  • Extract damaged or broken tuner screws
  • Make uniformly-sized wooden plugs for plugging and redrilling
The complete kit includes:

Screw extractor
Our tubular steel screw extractor works with your drill. Hardened teeth bore around a broken tuner-mounting screw (3/32" maximum diameter) to capture and remove it.

Plug cutter
Use this custom tool in your drill press to make a 3/16"-diameter wooden plug, a perfect match to fill the hole made by the extractor or the drill bit.

3/16" drill bit
To repair stripped screw holes, use this steel twist bit to match your plugs.

Alignment guide
Clamp this clear acrylic guide in place to help keep your tools right on center, and protect the instrument.

Screw extraction success

By

This kit relieved stress of further damaging the bass guitar neck of my Acoustic Washburn Bass. The E tuning peg screw head was sheared off. I easily extracted the screw with this kit, picked up a small length of maple wood, drilled out a dowd with the other bit, glued, waited then chiseled the excess off and zipped a replacement screw back in to the tuning peg. Thanks for the video and the kit!

Lifesaver if you work on restorations

Purchased for the guitar bench have used in several furniture and other restoration projects. I wish it came in more sizes for other types of screws. Life safer for work on garage sale restorations.

Worked like a charm!

80's Les Paul with not only a glued-in broken strap button screw but two broken drill bit tips from someone trying before me...

As presumed, the screw extractor bit was too small but, after removing the shrapnel left behind to expose just the screw, the plug cutter worked perfectly.

I can see how the alignment guide would be useful however it wasn't in my case because of the screw location.

Perfect! Easy to use, professional result.

I love it. I have been aware of this tool for a while. Now that another tuner screw got stuck and snapped in a particularly hard maple neck I ordered the full kit and it works like a charm.
It's really easy to use, even with my battery powered, handheld power drill. This set provides a really nice, clean and professional solution for a problem that used to be a real pain. Thank you Dan!

3/16 Plug cutter best used in a drill press

Not sure what wizardry Dan is using in the video, but I had about zero success rate using the 3/16 plug cutter in a hand held drill. No matter how hard I try slow or fast The plugs would just break or pulverize.

When used in a drill press at a slow speeed (600 rpm or so), I have success almost every time. Perfect plugs that are the full length of the tool. Removing the plugs from the tool can be a bit tricky sometimes however.

Price is a bit high for these, but they are the only tools of their kind on the market.

A well thought out tool, a busy shop must have

For years I've used a hollow copper tube with the end notched into teeth to be a cutting bit to drill around the running key screw with the snapped off head too flush to grab. This kit is far superior with a real but and plus cutter. Makes my task quicker, cleaner in 1/2 the time.

Just what I needed

I broke a screw for the string retainer behind the locking nut. I had thought of buying these previously, but this forced my hand. All said and done, they worked flawlessly.

Expensive but right for the job

I sheared off a couple tuner screws in a rock maple neck and the extractor worked perfectly to get them out and leave holes that could be doweled and re-drilled. I'm docking one star because it's considerably more expensive than comparable products, but none of the go-to woodworking suppliers seem to have extractors this small. As always with StewMac service & shipping were exceptionally speedy.
