ColorTone Shellac

About This Item

Traditional instrument sealer/finish. ColorTone® shellac is a super pale platinum blonde supplied in dewaxed flakes for sealing, finishing and touchups.

It's compatible with most finishes and rubs out easily.

Dissolve shellac in Behkol solvent or denatured alcohol, in the amount you need for the job—no wasted finish or shelf life problems.

ColorTone® Shellac makes an excellent sealer over stains and under lacquer (helps keep fisheye-causing contaminates out of topcoats, too) and is useful for finish repairs and touchups. When the dry flakes are dissolved in alcohol the resulting shellac can be brushed, wiped on, French polished (using mineral oil as a lubricant), or sprayed in thin coats. Shellac has good clarity and compatibility with most finishes, is easy to rub out, and easy to repair with additional shellac.

Just the right amount for a small number of tasks

It was just the right amount to whip up a 1qt batch of 1lb cut. I just needed a small amount to use as a top and binding channel sealer for two guitars on my workbench.

Effective and Easy to Use.

Trying my hand at French polishing, the Color Tone Shellac arrived well packaged and on time. Paired with the offered solvent I mixed a one pound mix. All went together according to plan. Heed the instruction to mix very well agitating often to avoid the undissolved shellac clumping at the bottom. Shaking every few minutes for ‘a while’ will result in a nice mix. I didn’t shake enough my first batch and had a bit of a ‘clod’ of shellac. A clean pick worked to break up the material to allow further dissolving. Follow the suggested technique for application.
The mahogany guitar body I’m finishing is looking fantastic. That said, I have many more coat to apply as part of the French polishing. I’m expecting a fabulous finish using this shellac, the solvent, and tips from StewMac.

This is my first experience using shellac and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I'm using it to touch up holes in a 1994 fender maple headstock using some hard maple sawdust as a filler. (screw holes from old tuners)
I used some cheap denatured alcohol from Walmart and it dissolved in just a few hours. Dry time is only 5 - 10 minutes between coats!

I bought this shellac to restore a mid-1800's parlor guitar. I wanted it to look as period correct as possible. Along with the Behlen Behkol solvent and a little olive oil, the finish looks great. It looks like the guitar aged gracefully even though it was in poor condition to start. I also made the fret board from a Stew Mac ebony blank. Matching restoration tuners set it off nicely. Always quality products at Stew Mac.
