Mailbag question: What is your opinion of using LED lighting in a lutherie shop?
Robert O'Brien: Today's Tips du Jour Mailbag question comes to us from Colorado. "Robert, LED lighting seems to be popular now. What is your opinion? Dave in Parker, Colorado."
Why I like LED lighting in my shop
Well, hey Dave. I'm also from Parker, Colorado. I like LED lighting. In fact, I've got a couple there on the bench that I'm getting ready to install. I'm slowly changing out all of the fluorescent lighting in my shop and going to LED lighting. There are a couple of reasons for that. First of all, it's cheaper to run. And also the starters in the fluorescents apparently sometimes go bad, and then you're trying to troubleshoot and trying to change out the starters and the bulbs are expensive. The LED lighting is much more efficient. It's just as bright, if not brighter, depending on what you get, and it's trouble free, basically. So yeah, I'm a big fan of LED lighting. I'm also a big fan of any lighting in your shop because my eyes are starting to get a little older as a lot of guys that are probably watching this video.
I went to Readers a few years ago so I can't even see in the shop and read the ruler. So yeah, lighting is critical. If you're in a shop that has natural lighting, wow, that's more power to you, that's a great way to go. If you are in a basement shop, then you don't have a lot of lighting, then yeah, the more lighting the better.
LED lighting tip for your shop
Speaking of lighting, let me give you a little tip. This is a little LED puck light. And these things cost three or four bucks at your home improvement stores. They're very bright, as you can see. And you can put these things anywhere in your shop, under your cabinets, around your bench. I even have one in my Go-bar deck. Put one in the top of your Go-bar deck and it lights up the whole area. You can actually see what you're doing as you're in there working. So LED puck lights, fantastic way to go as well. But yeah, I'm a big fan of LED lighting. So thanks for your question I hope this has been helpful and happy building.
