Waverly A-style Mandolin Tuners with Ebony Knobs

About This Item

Ultra smooth operation, precise, reliable tuning, long life and classic beauty. Performing artists play in tune and stay in tune with Waverly.

"I wouldn't want to use anything else." Rhonda Vincent

"Simply the best you can get." David Grisman

"The best tuners in the world." Chris Thile

"They have changed my life." Sam Bush

"The frequent need for retuning during a show is gone." Ronnie McCoury

Waverly's renowned design eliminates looseness in the gears, for maximum tuning efficiency. The precision-machined stainless steel worm gears, bronze alloy string post gears and 16:1 gear ratio assure smooth, accurate tuning. Each handsome engraved baseplate is computer-machined from a single brass billet, combining the ideal weight with unwavering stability. Classic satin silver or gold plating. Waverly tuners are a statement of quality!

Each set includes:
• Pair of 4-left, 4-right tuning machines
• Knurled press-fit brass peghead bushings
• Mounting screws
Gear ratio 16:1
Standard string post spacing 29/32" (23mm)
Required peghole diameter 21/64" (8.3mm)

Important: To be sure these tuners fit your mandolin, compare your existing tuner dimensions and peghole spacing to our specs before ordering. Waverly tuners will not fit Gibson A-style mandolins made before 1925. Golden Age Restoration A-style Tuners are available specifically for retrofitting these early mandolins that have wider (.931") string post spacing.

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly drilled. Our Mandolin Peghead Drill Jig ensures precise 29/32" spacing for accurate alignment.

Bushings: Get the right fit! Use our slow-speed #2061 Bushing Reamer (.328" diameter) to cut a clean, accurate counterbore for a professional job.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1712 Depth-stop Drill Bit (5/64" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

Stew-Mac is the Best!

Verified Buyer

I love Stew-Mac. They have always had anything I've needed for my guitars. I will not hesitate to call them again. BTW, their service dept. is GREAT!

Sweet tuners, expensive, should come with spanner

Verified Buyer

Great tuners! Satin silver is a very unique look. Ebony knobs are very shiny. One worm screw bushing backed off during initial install and required resetting to eliminate substantial backlash. Luckily I was given a spanner wrench for this by one of the founders, as every professional builder should have the option to own as the adjustment would be somewhat challenging without it.
Wish the mandolin tuners came in unplanted bronze with brass posts and bushings like the 3 on plate guitar tuners, and at only 4/3 the price of said guitar tuners. Definitely the best tuning action by far of any mandolin machines I have used once properly adjusted.

Simply the best in my opinion.

Verified Buyer

Waverly tuners offer the combination of style, quality, and functionality that I look for. They are on all of my instruments.

Very nice machines

Verified Buyer

All was expected BUT the recommended 3/32" drill bit is too large for the supplied mounting screws! 0.070" is more appropriate.

Response from StewMac

You're absolutely right, a smaller bit would be more appropriate. We have updated our text. Thank you for your feedback!

waverly tuners

I tried some cheaper tuners. The posts inside the bushing were so sloppy that under string tension it was all I could do to turn the knobs. I changed them out for Waverlies. Problem solved! The Waverly quality is second to none as is Stewart Macdonald's service.
