Nut and Saddle Vise

About This Item

A better way to hold nuts and saddles for easier, faster shaping.

Sure, most of us already have a shop vise. And for a long time, you've probably used yours to hold nuts and saddles for filing and shaping. But you've also noticed that your vise jaws get in the way when you're trying to file the top of that nut or saddle, so you're constantly repositioning the work in the jaws.

We considered the problem and designed a special vise that gives you the clearance you need for an easier and more efficient job.

The custom jaws are extra tall, with steep angles for easier access to your work. The end of the vise is beveled for extra relief, too. The 2"-wide steel jaws are hardened for durability and specially undercut to stay parallel under pressure, holding the nut or saddle uniformly without slippage.

For other jobs, the jaws open to 2-7/16", making it versatile for gripping all kinds of small work. This is a well-made, heavy little portable steel vise with a 2" x 5-5/8" footprint; you can clamp it to the edge of your workbench, or into your larger shop vise.

The Nut and Saddle Vise is included in the Essential Nut Making Tool Kit, which has all the basic tools you'll need for shaping, string-spacing, slotting and fitting string nuts like a pro.

Very versatile

I have several bench mounted vises this size and on up. The specific way this vise holds things like nuts and bridge saddles up and out of the way of the clamp makes this vise very useful for finer detail oriented work.

I'm glad I bought this vice. Watch the StewMac video - it does exactly what they say it does. I cut and shaped this nut all on that vice.

Very handy little vise with many uses

I have had mine for a few weeks and have yet to make a nut or saddle with it. Instead, it has been used mostly to hold parts while filing and soldering. The jaws are precise and square and effectively hold small parts. The action is smooth and positive with little or no slop. It is very versatile and I suspect most people use it as a general purpose vise for small workpieces. Use care when securing it in a bench vise. The body does flex a bit making the action tight if you apply too much pressure.. I use plastic inserts in my cheap bench vise to get a more secure hold. This is a good and very useful tool.

Very useful, but mine had quality issues

I have purchased lots of tools and parts from StewMac and they have always been of superior quality. But this vise in nowhere near the usual quality.
If I lived in the USA I would have returned it, but as I reside in the UK I decided to strip it down and spend an hour correcting the quality errors.
1. The jaws only touched at one end when clamped up and had a 20 thousandth gap at the other end. It would not hold a bone nut or saddle blank securely. I had to modify the moving jaw to get them both to align properly.
2. The machining of all the parts is very rough. The jaws marked a piece of bone that I tried in them. The rough base scratched the table of my pillar drill as I slid it in place to align my workpiece with the drill bit. I rubbed down and smoothed every machined surface on the entire vise.
3. The screw on the top that locates the moving jaw onto main lead screw was too long and clamped the mechanism so that it was almost impossible to turn the crank handle. I had to grind the screw length down by about 1/64th to get it to work properly.

Having completed all that re-work it now performs as it should have done out of the box. It will become one of my most used and useful tools. It's a good weight and very solid with decent clamping pressure. I'm now very happy with it.

This thing is quite handy for light duty. It holds nuts and allows for easy change of angles as necessary. I don't have it mounted, allowing me to place it in a position that suites the need. Have to hold it in place with a hand or clamp.
I also use it to install fret board edge dots. Holds at 90 degrees on drill press.
