StewMac Fret Slotting Miter Box

About This Item

The simplest way to cut perfect fret slots.

A StewMac original, better than ever
The guitarmakers in our shop designed this miter box. Through years of constant use and clever improvements, they've created the single best tool for hand-cutting fret slots.

Cuts smooth as glass
Your favorite fret saw will glide through the ball-bearing rollers with no jamming or chattering. You've never felt a miter saw move this freely without looseness. The bearings hold the blade perpendicular to the fretboard at a perfect right angle.

Clear view of the action
Our uncluttered design lets you see and feel the slot being cut. Set the slot depth to suit your fretwire, and the saw stops cutting when you reach that point. Easy!

Work fast with templates
Our Fret Scale Templates are made for our miter box: their notches click onto the box's index pin so you can slot an entire board quickly. No measuring! Of course, you can use the miter box without templates too.

Helping-hand thumbwheels hold the fretboard, leaving your hands free for sawing.

"You won't believe how smoothly our improved fret slotting system works!"
—Don MacRostie, StewMac R&D

The Fret Slotting Miter Box accommodates fingerboards up to 1/2" (12.70mm) thick and 2-7/8" (73mm) wide. The box is rugged aluminum, 12" (305mm) long. Hex wrenches are included for setting the rollers to fit your saw blade.

Save by ordering a miter box and fret saw together!
Works equally well with our Fret Slotting Saw or Japanese Fret Saw.

Poor quality for the price

For the price of this miter box, I expected a much better quality tool our of the box. The holes in the side pieces still had burrs on them from machining, which caused the height adjustment pieces to barely function. There was also machining debris around the template indexing pin, which did not allow the template to side square against the front side (with the stewmac logo). After disassembling this box, and cleaning up all the machining junk, the box works great, and makes the accurate, tedious job of cutting fret slots by hand, quick and simple. Again, for the price, I was hoping to not have to spend 2+ hours taking apart, cleaning, reassembling, and squaring up this tool. I would expect to have to do these things with the much cheaper alternatives available on the internet.

Fret Slot Sawing Jig

I bought this over a year ago when I was building my 1st Ukulele, Iam building 2 tenor Ukes now I went to use this jig to cut my fret slots It does work nice but it takes alot of Very tedious adjusting to get everything just right it is somewhat a pain in the ****Just my opinion*** But it is made well & it does work well once you have adjusted everything. Also I think I would buy the scale templates that work with this I think it would make things alot easier.

Works well with the saw. To bad it went on sale a week after I bought it.

. . . be sure and set up the side panels so that you are certain that your saw is cutting square to your fretboard blank. As part of my learning curve, I got it mounted up, reads all the directions, and got about four slots down my blank before I checked the square of the slots to the side of the blank, and to my surprise--they were off by a degree or so. Fortunately, the sides are designed so that you can dial them in so that they route your saw just right. Also to my good fortune, my blank was wide enough to simply square my centerline based upon the slightly angled fret slots, so I just went all the way to my last fret, and was still able to cut the tapered board accord to the line squared to the fret slots, and everything turned out perfectly. Working on subsequent blanks has been a breeze ever since!

Great for fret slots, but there is another use

Great for fret slots, but there is another use. When removing an acoustic guitar back, sometimes the liner blocks (AKA kerfing) are broken beyond repair. This jig is excellent for making new matching liner block strips matching the block size of the original strips. Starting with a strip profiled to match the existing blocks, this easily cuts perfect controlled depth slots into small or long lengths. It is helpful to double stick tape a 1/8 X 2 inch wood strip having one side covered with slick tape along the miter box bottom. The older gents style saw works best for this.

I bought for my first build, paired with one of the StewMac template guides. I got the full set with the Japanese pullsaw. Guys, it's awesome. Invest in this and you'll be very happy.

you could make this but it would cost you more in time and effort to match it...

I made a similar miter box after buying some StewMac templates and the Japanese fretting saw. It took me a weekend and it had some issues but worked very well, except for controlling the depth of cut. Having better things to do I bought this StewMac tool on sale and have been very happy with it. It's like a refined version of my homemade box, made by a machine shop. No shortcomings. Should have bought this in the first place.

Perfection

Very easy to set up. Checked with machinist square before cutting. Received Perfection.

Came with necessary Allen wrenches for setting up. My only recommendation for improving this would be using the ball style Allens for quicker set up times, and drilling a couple holes to hold the Allen wrenches. (Wink wink stewmac).
