StewMac Safe-T-Planer

About This Item

Create smooth, planed surfaces using your drill press
Our Safe-T-Planer is the affordable way to add a planer to your shop. In your drill press, it planes wood to any thickness, leaving it smooth and ready for sanding.

Plane large or small pieces
The Safe-T-Planer cuts a path 2-3/4" wide. Large surfaces are handled by making multiple passes.

    Use the Safe-T-Planer for:
  • Solid guitar bodies
  • Necks and pegheads
  • Peghead overlays
  • Nut and saddle blanks
  • Fingerboards
  • Unjoined guitar tops and backs
  • Unbent guitar sides

High speed steel cutters
The Safe-T-Planer is machined from aluminum with a steel shank. Its three high-speed steel cutters are heat-treated for durability. Each cutter features a spare edge, to double the working life.

Fits most standard 1/2" drill press chucks. Comes with instructions, including how to make a simple plywood planing table for your drill press.

Replacement Cutters are sold in a set of 3. These cutters fit the StewMac Safe-T-Planer, and are not compatible with other brands.

Width of cut: 2-3/4" (69.85mm)
Cutter depth: 1/4" (6.35mm)
Overall diameter: 3-1/8" (79.38mm)

Great alternative to buying a thickness planer

By

Repairing a hole in the top of an acoustic guitar. Needed to take 1/8” spruce plank a little thinner. I entertained the thought of buying an inexpensive thickness planer from a big box hardware store. After reading the reviews on the products they offered I searched for alternatives and stumbled across this little gem. Perfect for small jobs. Worked exactly like it should. Having a decent drill press helps. I had no problem with the cutter coming off the shaft like a few folks did. Just wish I could get plans to build the same table Dan uses in the instructional video. Thanks Stewmac for always making it easy

great and useful

Great product, takes the place of a planer for many jobs. I used it on the sides, back and sides of a guitar, no issues. Take the time to set up the depth and to make sure the table of your drill press is level.

Turned my benchtop drillpress into a vertical mill!

I have a 1936 model Delta drillpress (HEAVY DUTY!) and an x-y indexable vise that, along with the safety planer, has turned my drill press into a small vertical mill. I’ve milled both hard maple and cocobolo headstocks for the guitars and mandolins I build and I’m looking forward to milling fretboards and bridge plates with it, as well.

Very happy with the performance of this tool. I really have no need for a full sized planer so this is great for my needs. I was a little worried it would be too good to be true, but it has worked perfectly for me so far.

Love being able to plane pieces that otherwise can not be run through my planer or drum sander. Excellent addition to my shop :)

Short pieces of cypress

By

Some pieces of Monterey Cypress are too short for my planer. I just finished a 7 inch square quartersawn storage box lid for an art piece. I learned to take my time, hold down with a push stick, and to Carefully feed in the first cut. The YouTube video was invaluable for your jig set-up. The finished surface is rough but ready for a finely set plane or scraper and it's FLAT. This is a great tool.

Very handy for necks, make sure you follow the instructions!

First time I used the Safe-T-Planer I was disappointed with the results. I didn't get a smooth flat finish on my neck head like I was expecting. But I didn't follow the instructions of the video on setting it up, just ploughed right in and used it without making a fence. (Also misread my drill press band settings so had that running too slow).

When I used it the second time to plane my fretboard I went to the trouble to make the fence and check the speed of my drill - excellent results the second time round.

So to summarise, very happy with the plane. My tip for new players, follow the video and installation instructions and don't skimp, make the fence and table and you won't be disappointed.

Works as an attachment to my radial arm saw.

I don't have a drill press so I used a jacobs chuck attachment on my radial arm saw to attach the Safe-T Planer.
It worked very well using the fence and hold downs I already had for molding head cutters.

I'm still learning how to use this with my Wen benchtop drill press but so far I've trimmed an acoustic bridge and it worked well.
