Razor Files

About This Item

Super sharp and super efficient!
Imagine putting hundreds of little razor-sharp planes to work while you're shaping an instrument neck.

They're the sharpest fine-cut woodworking files we've ever used. They cut quickly and aggressively, but leave the wood surprisingly smooth. You'll discover they're real time-savers for shaping solidbodies, custom jigs and clamping cauls too.

A new manufacturing process is the key to Razor File efficiency. Rows of semi-circular plane-like teeth are chemically etched to extreme sharpness, and diagonal grooves are milled at strategic intervals to minimize clogging. Available flat or curved, each steel Razor File has "safe" smooth sides (the flat file cuts on both faces). Early samples of these files were quickly snapped up by our R&D guys for testing in their own shops, and they immediately loved them.

Large and tapered files include easy-grip contoured handle for safe, comfortable use. Threads inside the handle grip the file tang securely. Handle length: 3-5/8" (92.07mm)

Large files remove a lot of wood fast. Use them for roughing-in neck blanks or embarking on that solidbody guitar project. Includes easy-grip contoured handle for safe, comfortable use. Threads inside the handle grip the file tang securely.
Cutting surface: 7" x 3/4" (1800mm x 19mm)
Overall length including handle: 12-1/4" (310mm)

Tapered files offer a bit more versatility than the large files. Use them when shaping a volute on an acoustic guitar neck, blending in curves, or working on tricky spots like the horn of a solidbody guitar. Includes easy-grip contoured handle for safe, comfortable use. Threads inside the handle grip the file tang securely.
Cutting surface: 7" (180mm)
Tapers from 3/4" to 5/32" (19mm to 4mm)
Overall length including handle: 12-1/4" (310mm)

Small files are for more detailed shaping work: tight contours, corners and smaller surfaces. The handle is rubber-coated for comfort.
Cutting surface: 3-7/8" x 3/8" (98mm x 10mm)
Overall length: 7-7/8" (200mm)

I don't build guitars--just furniture building and some figure carving. I was very impressed with the quality of the tool and the finish it leaves. So nice to find this size for getting in to difficult places.

The razor files work beautifully. They do get clogged after a while, and I haven't figured out how to clean them yet.

Even better than I thought it would be

Wow, my files were really old and dull...but on their best day, they were never "sharp." I got the small flat version and it's SHARP. The edges have no cutting teeth so it's perfect for cleaning up binding channels. It makes very fast work of shaping necks. My new favorite tool!

Same comments as I had with their bigger brothers. I particularly like the small size to get into tight places.

I'm not an instrument maker, I'm a furniture maker. I've used this type of file for many years. In the metal work industry, these are called vixen files. For wood, you need to go easy. Don't push down hard. Let the tool do the work. They produce a relatively fine finish with final clean up performed with a mill file and then a card scraper or sand paper.

Razor files are awesome

I first got the two small files a loved shaping my necks with them. They cut so well and quickly that I minimized my belt sander’s use. The shavings cut down my sawdust intake greatly. Then I got the big moon file. Wow ! It cuts like crazy ! Thank you for my favorite new tool.
