StewMac Deluxe Fret Tang Nipper

About This Item

Cleanly nip off the fret tang, ideal for bound fingerboards
Our Deluxe Fret Tang Nipper works with any size fretwire.

Undercutting the fret tangs is essential for fret work: it makes the job faster for bound necks where the fret ends go over the binding, and it helps save the lacquer finish at the edges of unbound fretboards. Our Deluxe Fret Tang Nipper does this job in a snap, just squeeze the handle and the fret tang is cut quickly and cleanly without bending or crimping.

A heavy-duty workhorse
Designed to adjust to any size fretwire, from narrow to extra-wide jumbo, all in one tool. The hardened steel cutters cut through nickel-silver fretwire like butter, and they're tough enough to cut harder materials like stainless too. They're built to stay sharp for a lifetime on your bench. From guitar to bass to mandolin, these nippers handle any job or instrument.

Save time AND your hands!
The adjustable depth stop gives you accurate, repeatable cuts, making even complex fret jobs a breeze. No more time wasted adjusting the tool after every fret. The extended extra-thick rubber grips are built to absorb shock—a big relief for your hands on those back-to-back refrets.

Our original Fret Tang Nipper is a great option for occasional fret jobs, but if you're in a busy shop or getting serious about building—our Deluxe Fret Tang Nipper has the versatility, cutting power, and comfort you need.

    Features:
  • 2 interchangeable inserts with 4 cutting settings
  • Cuts any size wire
  • Adjustable depth stop
  • Extended rubber-molded grips
  • Hardened steel cutting jaws
  • Cuts through harder fretwire—even stainless
  • Overall length: 9" (228mm)

Comes with 2-sided interchangeable tables for various widths of fretwire:
Narrow side for widths 0.053" to 0.080" (1.35mm to 2.03mm)
Medium side for widths 0.084" to 0.095" (2.13mm to 2.41mm)
Large side for widths 0.100" to 0.106" (2.54mm to 2.69mm)
Extra-large side for widths 0.106" to 0.110" (2.69mm to 2.79mm)

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire*. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.
*Excludes our original Fret Tang Nippers. We recommend our Deluxe Fret Tang Nippers for stainless-steel fretwire.

Major improvement over original

Bought this on a whim and am very happy I did. I stopped using the older style tool as I found it inconsistent and awkward. This tool is a major improvement, very very pleased with the results.

EXCELLENT!!!!!!

These new deluxe fret tang nippers are the best i've ever used and I highly recommend them.

1- The spring action is very smooth and the longer handles make the squeeze far easier than any other fret tang nipper i've tried. The handles also have thick rubber which is even nicer.
2- The cutter is sharp and thick so no change of deforming.
3- The cut is even across the removed tang (my older cheaper version from 15 years ago cuts unevenly).
4- The 2 included inserts with 4 fret crown sizes (which range from .053"-110") fit any fret size which makes cutting them far easier as they nest against the insert curve perfectly.
5- Another very nice new feature is the depth stop to gauge the amount of tang being nipped off.
6- There is a small window is the depth stop/holder which allows you to see what size insert you have fitted.

All in all, this tool is extremely well thought out and works perfectly and beyond any others of its type.

Just buy them :)

I think it will be fine

I originally bought the other model but it created too much distortion in the ends of the fretwire. I was using it for narrow wire, .053 which it apparently wasn't made for. The deluxe model works pretty well. It still distorted the fret ends a bit, so I placed a thin shim, ( cardstock ) under the interchangeable anvil and it works better.

Worth every blood blister

Wow! These work great and are far superior to the other nippers. They really speed the job up with the depth stop and big bite. Minimal filing. Like all nippers they bend the radius end up a little so soft jaw pliers to bend them back.
Guaranteed at least one blood blister to the meat of the hand though.

Great tool, but could be improved

I already submitted a review, but after pinching my hand with this tool, I found a modification that would prevent me from doing it again. There should be a stop put on the tool to prevent it from closing more than necessary. I’ve added a photo showing my modification. Also it would be nice if it had a latch to keep it closed when storing it in my tool pouch. Other than that , this is a great tool to have. It is much better than the nibbler model.

Great fret nipper

This is the second fret nipper that I bought from StewMac. The first one was the cheaper model for about $50. That one fell apart and I could not figure out how to reassemble it. This nipper works 10 times better than the cheaper model. Spend a few extra bucks and get this one and you will not be disappointed.

First impression

Look and feel are pretty good. Small wiggleroom in the pivot was easily taken out. The blades catch very slightly when passing each other, not a problem per se (will probably wear in or i will help it along). Would have liked to see full cast handles, but the price is so good that i understand the decision. Cuts close to flush, i mean there is only the slightest sign of the broken off tang on both nickel and stainless. I would probably recommend cutting stainless in a couple of passes (not for sake of power applied, but saving the pliers/blades), full depth nickel was cut with ease. So far so good, specially for the price. Looks like it should last a while.

4 stars not to get ahead of myself. Will update after first few fretjobs/ refrets. Cheers!

Dan Erlewine sent me the new Stewmac Deluxe Fret Tang Nipper and boy did Stewmac hit it out of the park with this one!

I've bought just about every fret tang nipper, nibble and cutter you can think of. The modified Klein sheet metal nibblers were always a decent tool but they were finicky and could easily mangle the tang. I owned the sintoms nibbler and got rid of it 10 minutes after I got it for reasons I won't get into here. The stewmac nibbler that's of a similar design is okay but it's not easy on the hands and I find it somewhat awkward to use. The summit fret tang nipper is okay but I find it bends the bead of the wire too easily. None of them handle radiused wire very well. So while we all bend our wire to the radius of the fingerboard to whatever degree, fret nibblers seem to only work well on straight wire.

I'm pleased to say that the new deluxe nipper from stewmac handles radiused wire very well, it comes with an adjustable depth stop to cut the tang constantly so there's less constant measuring and it doesn't mangle or bend the fretwire at all which is awesome. They do leave a very small amount of the tang that still needs to be filed off like any of the nibblers, but I think the new stewmac tool does as good if not better than most others in that regard as well.

There are two different plates that will handle any fretwire size so there's no more having to have different tools for different sizes. I put it through the paces today on a few sets of frets for refrets we're currently working on and it was as comfortable to clip the tang on the last fret several sets of frets later as it was on the first.

If you do a lot of frets you should get one of these!!

Just got it today and I’m really pleased with the ergonomic handle length and the various fret sizes. Like having four tools in one. I have several of the original tang nippers as well as home made ones, but this is a great feat of engineering! You really hit a home run with this design. Congratulations on always improving your tools.
