StewMac Fret Scale Templates

About This Item

Accurate fret slots without guesswork. Designed for use with our Fret Slotting Miter Box, or your shop table saw.

Each template is made of durable stainless steel and has notches for two different fret scales. Includes an indexing pin and instructions.

These templates provide accurate fret positioning for guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, or ukulele.
#4914 - #4919 guitar and bass templates allow for 24 fret slots.
#4911 baritone and #4912 bass templates provide 22 fret slots.
#4920 banjo / mandolin template will locate 22 frets for banjo and 29 for mandolin.
#4909 ukulele template will provide locations for 18 frets and the #4910 ukulele template will locate 20 fret slots.

"I asked StewMac to develop ukulele fret scale templates because I'm so impressed with their templates for fretting guitars. Based on my experience in industrial product design, I believe StewMac's steel templates are more accurate and robust than acrylic templates, which break easily and become less accurate with use. And each template has two scale lengths for one price, so they're the best value available."
—Mark Roberts, master luthier

Templates are 2-31/32" (75.5mm) wide and 5/64" (2.05mm) thick, 14 gauge stainless steel

Special notes:
#4915 Martin Dreadnought scale is commonly referred to as 25.4" but is actually 25.34".

#4916 For Fender 25.5" includes fretboard cut-off and nut positions. Also for 25" scales like Paul Reed Smith®, Dobro®, Danelectro®, and Benedetto.

#4914 and #4917 We offer templates for Gibson's 25.3" long scale, plus three shorter Gibson scales. Over the years, Gibson has referred to each of the shorter scales as 24-3/4".

For use with a table saw: Install the supplied index pin in the fence of your table saw. Attach a template to the back of the fingerboard. On your table saw, align the blade perpendicular to the fingerboard, and saw the slots with the template side up. We recommend a Fret Slotting Table Saw Blade.

For use with a luthier's miter box: Simply attach a template to the back of the fingerboard, and saw each fret slot after locating the index pin (preinstalled in our miter box) in the corresponding template notch. We recommend our Fret Slotting Miter Box.

Fret template

I bought this to use with my Stew Mac miter box. Iam building 2 tenor ukes from scratch, this template makes it easier to cut fret slots my only issue is I couldn't find info that said the first slot was the nut it should be marked on the template, Also I think there should be a centerline on the template it would make it easy to line up a fretboard that has been tapered

25.5"/ 25"Fret scale template

The built quality is great, it is way heavier than anticipated and it works really well with the fret slotting miter box.

The only complaint that I have is that I wish it had a center line engraved. that would be super helpful when trying to align the fretboards.

But over all I love it and I will order the 24.75" next

Excellent - but more scales needed!

I started using this templates about 15 years ago and I still am! they last so long. What a pity some popular scales are not there:
classical 664mm 645mm 640mm;
flamenco: 655 mm
manouche: 670mm 648mm
+ all the european mandlolin/mandocello scales
add the missing sizes and this will be the perfect slotting system!

These templates will last a lifetime and you could hand them down to your children.
More scales would be great.
Thanks Stewmac.

Just perfect

I tried making my own template out of acrylic and a hacksaw and just didn't feel confident about the spacing. Plus the acrylic was flimsy and definitely not durable.

The StewMac template is worth every penny. I know it's a bit pricey, but it is machined perfectly. It's also extremely durable and a lot thicker than I thought it would be. Plus I never have to mark frets by hand anymore. I use it with a copy of the StewMac miter box (made by another company) and it works perfectly.

Only downside is mine showed up with a few scratches on it. Maybe they shouldn't have been there, but let's be realistic -- this thing was going to get scratches on it the second I used it. I also know if I complained about it, StewMac would have rectified the situation immediately, so I really don't think it's worth removing a star for that.

One thing that I really wish StewMac would do is list full dimensions for each template. I have a case that I keep all my luthier tools in, and I had no idea if this would fit in it. For those wondering, the 25.5" scale template is 24" long. Not a big deal, just would have been nice to know.

Quality fantastic, concept Disappointing

Don’t misunderstand me, these templates are the best. Accurate, strong, and simply perfect for my saw guide but I am a hobbyist that builds on two basic platforms. My guitars are either 25.5” or 24.75”, and to get the templates from Stew means buying both. The b side of both templates are never going to be used by me. This is move is done to make more money, nothing more. As for a great template, yes, these are the ones to buy.

25"/25.5" StewMac Fret Scale Templates

By

I own 3 StewMac metal fret scale templates and they are all flawless, super well machined, and most importantly accurate. I own several other different scale templates with scale lengths currently not available through StewMac in different materials and there is no comparison. Like most everything I have bought here you know it's something you will have and rely on for years and years to come. Worth every penny.

excellent quality, I can't believe how thick these things are! Very nice job. I just would like to know if there is a 25.5 and a 24.75 scale on the same template.

They arrived to me very quickly and were packaged extremely well.

Thanks again guys.

Response from StewMac

Hi Jon,

Thank you for sharing this feedback with us. We do not have a Fret Scale Template available with a 25.5" and a 24.75" scale on the same template, but I will pass your suggestion along to our product development team. Hopefully it is something that we can offer in the furture.
