Precision Straightedges

About This Item

For accurate fretting and neck evaluation.
We make our Precision Straightedges specifically for checking neck straightness and relief, evaluating truss rod adjustments, and pinpointing high or low frets. Available in four lengths, for working on any fretted instrument, from mandolins to guitars to basses.

The narrow beveled edge allows easy and accurate viewing of the gap between the edge and the surface being checked. Made of ultra-high-grade stainless steel with a satin finish, each straightedge is precision-machined for accuracy to ±.0015" per foot. These straightedges are also ideal for laying out projects on wood or paper, and for setting up table saws, jointers, and other shop equipment.

Made in the USA of German/Austrian stainless steel. You won't find this level of quality with cheap knockoffs!
Each of our straightedges go through a rigorous 13-step manufacturing process that guarantees accuracy. These straightedges are extremely precise, heavy duty, and designed to handle a lifetime of use in your shop. Before each one gets shipped, it's personally inspected before leaving the factory.

Our Precision Straightedges won't bend or dent as easily as some aluminum straightedges on the market. The satin finish allows you to mark it with a pencil in order to make notes or to compare one guitar’s setup to another.

  • Guaranteed accuracy to +/- .0015" per foot
  • 0.090" thick 420 German/Austrian surgical stainless steel (2.286mm)
  • Hardened and tempered for lasting accuracy
  • Individually inspected to ensure precise tolerances
  • Proudly made in Ohio, USA
#3850 18" Precision Straightedge is part of our Basic Setup Kit.

For acoustic guitars, our Neck Set Gauge is designed to attach to the #3799 24" Precision Straightedge.

A perfect straightedge for guitars

By

Verified Buyer

You can trust this straightedge. Use it with feeler gauges to measure the neck relieve, for instance 0.010" at the 7th fret. Be sure to measure it when you are wearing the guitar, or on it's side, not laying down on the bench.

This precision tapered straightedge makes the job of leveling the fretboard, leveling frets, or
doing a neck set, much easier. Use this strait edge to properly adjust the truss rod. This Precision
Straightedge will come in handy when laying out and building musical stringed instruments.
Great quality and product, StewMac.

It is not only perfect to flatten a neck, it comes handy to check the two parts of a sound board or a back before gluing for example.
(Sorry for my poor english)

Excellent straightedge, OUTSTANDING customer service!

I purchased the 24 inch straightedge for a bass neck I am building for a customer. I received the straightedge promptly after I ordered it (as is customary from Stewmac), but unfortunately, the straightedge was not completely true, so I had to return it for a replacement. I contacted Stewmac about the issue and since I am a Stewmax member, they sent me a prepaid postage label to return the straightedge. However, the post office lost the package. I contacted Stewmac about the issue to see if, by some chance, they had received it, or maybe had some information that I did not have. The representative I spoke with informed me that they had not received it, but was tracking the package and saw that I sent it, as it was scanned by the post office. Because of this, the representative informed me that Stewmac would send me a new straightedge! I was completely taken by surprise, as I was expecting to be out of the money that I spent for the item and have to purchase it again. This is the quality of customer service that Stewmac is known for! To say that I was appreciative would be a complete understatement! Stewmac truly values its customers and will go the extra mile to take care of their customers and ensure customer satisfaction.

Since this is technically supposed to be a review of the straightedge, I guess I should make some comments regarding that. The replacement straightedge I received was true and will work well for its intended purpose. Whether you need it for fret leveling, marking accurate and straight center lines, or any other purpose that demands a precise and straight mark, this straight edge will be an invaluable tool in your shop.

I needed this for the shop.

Great to have a quality straight edge. Lots of uses. As expected for Stewmac. My only reason for not going 5 stars was just after I bought it, StewMac came out with a new model that is better and cheaper. I waited awhile before I bought it. I wish I had waited two weeks for a chance at the new model.

one of the most useful tool

Very heavy and precise. One of the most useful toll in the shop, to adjust router, table or neck.
18" is the length of a standard guitar neck, 24" for a standard bass. Expensive, but worth the money as you gonna have it forever and it can be use for everything, not only luthier's job.
