ColorTone Buffing Compounds

About This Item

Professional high gloss polishing
ColorTone Buffing Compounds remove fine scratches from finish topcoats, metal, and plastic surfaces.

Designed specifically for musical instruments
These new formulas will give your instruments a professional shine for a showroom grade high gloss finish.

Used with the StewMac Guitar Buffer, they're ideal for polishing pickguards, bone nuts, wooden bridges, frets and other metal parts too.

ColorTone Buffing Compounds remove more scratches than automotive compounds (the industry standard), and were specifically designed and tested to achieve the stunning mirror finishes found on high-end guitars, mandolins, and other musical instruments.

Great value, less waste
24-ounce buffing bars are smaller than most, but still plenty of compound for years of use in both factories and small shops.

Important: use separate buffing wheels for each grade of compound.

When I went to Stew Mac to replace some of my Menzerna (as a one-man shop, the Menzerna bars typically last a very long time). I was surprised to find that they were no longer carrying it. Instead, they had their own brand in three grits instead of the several grits Menzerna offered.

I noted they were considerably smaller but also cheaper and I thought “why not?” because it’s hard to track down the right menzerna products because they keep changing the numbers on the grit.

So I bought the fine & the extra fine which I mostly have used. I still have some coarse Menzerna in a bar which I infrequently use.

Tried it out on a guitar and it was not getting the results I was accustomed to. Also, I noted a good deal of the bar was hitting the floor. I mean, it was like every time I tried to load the wheel, it was snowing buffing compound on the ground. Pretty wasteful.

I just seem to have a tougher time getting the gloss I was looking for and accustomed to compared with the Menzerna products.

I wasn’t sure what to do, I still had a little bit of Menzerna left so I put it to work and was rewarded with shine that seemed very familiar. Very glossy, very easy.

My final test came when I was buffing up a black pick guard for a tele copy and I decided to do a side-by-side comparison. I did 1/2 of the pick guard with Menzerna , and the other with the stew Mac.

There is no hiding The depth of gloss on pure black plastic. At that point it became obvious to me that Menzerna was indeed superior.

Stew Mac, I like and have bought a lot of your stuff, I’ve always considered it overpriced, but sometimes you just have to have some thing. This product I cannot recommend. Please Bring back Menzerna or else I will have to go hunt it down somewhere else. Thank you for reading this.

I purchased this buffing compound for polishing lacquered bowls that I turn on my wood lathe. I was leery as there are some negative reviews on this product specifically regarding the amount of residue that is left behind after buffing. I used all three of these compounds progressively and they produced excellent results. There is a bit of residue left behind but it is easily removed by wiping with a soft cloth. I highly recommend these compounds for polishing lacquer.

Excellent polishing compounds

I like these better than the Menzerna, compound, and actually prefer a slight build-up. The build-up helps protect the edges and occurs mainly where the buffer wheels are hitting the hardest, which is the delicate edges.

I'm throwing it away

I bought all 3 compounds a few months ago and used it for the 1st time yesterday. The medium worked ok, but the fine and extra fine were an absolute nightmare. I literally spent more time trying to remove the compound from the guitar than it took to buff it. When charging my wheel, more ended up on the floor and everywhere except the wheel. I will be throwing these in the trash since they almost ruined my guitar.

DO NOT BUY!!!!!

This is the worst buffing compound I have ever used. It leaves a residue that is nearly impossible to get out. I highly recommend Menzerna compounds over this product.

I use this after sanding and hand rubbing lacquer and conversion varnish finishes. It takes out the scratches and does it quickly. I follow it up with the fine compound and I get show quality finishes.
