Premium Wiring Kit for Telecaster with 4-way Switch

About This Item

Complete kit for wiring a Tele with a fourth "fat tone" switch position.

This special kit features an Oak Grigsby 4-way switch: the extra position combines the bridge and neck pickups in series for a fatter tone. You get all the parts you'll need to wire your pickups into your Tele®, plus a diagram to show you how.

Premium components include cloth-covered push-back wire—the right stuff for Fender and vintage-style guitar circuitry. CTS pots give longer life and smooth, accurate response.

    The kit incudes:
  • Switchcraft output jack
  • 250K CTS solid-shaft control pots (2)
  • Orange Drop® capacitors: .047uF and .001uF
  • Oak Grigsby 4-way lever switch with mounting screws
  • Switch knobs: black barrel and top-hat
  • Non-shielded cloth-insulated push-back wire: 22 AWG white, 12" long
  • Non-shielded cloth-insulated push-back wire: 22 AWG black, 24" long
  • Braided-shield push-back wire: 22AWG, 12" long

Pricy.  Top notch though.

Also I wish there was an option for coarse knob pots. Many people (the majority?) of people upgrading electronics are upgrading on import guitars...

Tele 4-Way Switch Kit

Purchased the kit for my G&L ASAT Classic. OMG. The guitar has come to life. It is now officially a versatile responsive tone monster. I would add only the following. While I have seen many comments in both directions regarding the plate, I did, in fact, need to route out the plate a bit to enable the switch to engage cleanly in the 1st and 4th positions.

Diagram was wrong

Same as Todd from Moncton, the wiring diagram is wrong, the Jack has to be grounded to the volume NOT the tone pot! Lots of fun sorting that out.....not

Response from StewMac

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your comment. While that may appear true in most cases, the ground lug (ring) of an output jack can be attached anywhere in the circuit that goes to ground. In the case of a Telecaster, both pots achieve continuity via the metal control plate they are attached to. Attaching the lug to the tone control in this scenario is perfectly acceptable and the circuit will perform as expected.

The price and quality of this kit was worth the extra tone. I think it also enhanced the existing tones but I didn't do a recording for comparison. The shipping charges were hi in my opinion but still worth it for the extra tone. I installed this on a new MIM tele Vintura.

Wanted to rate 5 stars-excellent, parts top notch. Diagram didn't work

Bought this to upgrade my mim standard telecaster.
The components are top quality....very very excellent!!
The diagram was an issue for me. It shows the ground from the output going to the tone pot. When I wired it that way the whole system basically shorted out?!?
Found a bunch of other diagrams for the same switch that show the output going to Volume Pot.

After tracing each wire several times to make sure I hadn't made a mistake....verifying that every part was soldered correctly (no cold joints). Finally resorted to the internet and found several similar diagrams for the 4 way Oaks Grimsby switch.

Removed the ground from the tone pot and soldered it to the volume pot. Worked instantly??
I'm not super advanced on this and have the most basic understanding. I don't know why it was like this or why it didn't work.

Anyway....I would definitely recommend this to anyone, but would caution on using the included diagram. It didn't work for me.

Hi Todd,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention! I have passed this along to the appropriate parties so that they can look into this further. We truly appreciate your feedback.

Surprised

The pots and capacitors were much bigger than I anticipated. The stock mini parts in my guitar looked very different, comparatively. This was a positive in my view. The pots and switch have a reassuring feel to them. The fourth position that the switch offered my G&L ASAT Classic Bluesboy Semi-hollow was a bit woolly and warm for my uses, but this is subjective to my guitar. I am pleased with both service and quality of products.

Full disclosure: I had a professional install the parts. A man with a hook for a hand could solder better than I can.

Sounds great, easy installation

This was my first time replacing guitar electronics, and the kit was great! Some soldering experience is absolutely required, but overall it wasn't horrible. Just triple-check everything! As for the "4th position," it sounds awesome...hard to describe, but I find it sounds a bit different than the typical middle position and a humbucker. More options is more better, right? Totally worth it.

Very happy with this wiring kit

I am a very picky Tele player playing mostly clean country leads.
After purchasing a new USA 60s original Tele and finding the Volume and Tone controls were muddy when turned down even a little bit. I decided to try this. I know how to solder but was a bit over my head with this. When it was finished and working the Vol. and Tone function is now fantastic.
Very happy with this product and the 4 way switching.

This kit truly brought my Tele alive! The delivery to Finland was very quick despite it was a couple of days in the Finnish customs waiting for me to pay the tax.

Inside there was “thanks” written in Finnish, a small gesture which made my day! Cheers!
