Awesome idea, poor builds

All 3 of these I have received now have had issues with the switch going past the last point of contact. They are super versatile and awesome, but if I am using a pre-cut pickguard, I can't really remedy the issue.

some issues

By

The switch is cool and definitely useable BUT

For whatever reason the screws that were supplied are stupidly long (maybe to wire a les paul or something). On a strat (where I assume this would be most commonly installed), they end up actually hitting the contacts. It took me about 4 hours to figure out why everything worked when I had it apart but when I put it back together it wouldn't work. I ended up frying one switch and one pot taking everything apart.

The instructions are pretty inadequate and there's not a wealth of information online. Certainly a challenge for someone not very experienced.

Supply shorter screws and really good instructions with a lot of wiring diagrams and a better explanation of how it works and it would be 5 stars.

A Great Mod

By

I've performed this mod on three Tele's now and really love the results. The "humbucker" position is my favorite. One of the installations was in a Squire Thin Line and I had no problems. I use a hot (250-300 C) iron to solder the tabs so I can "get in and out quick. That way I don't overheat the tabs. I also swear by Alpha Metals solder. I don't have a problem with the thickness and it works much better than the thin type solder usually recommended (and I do a LOT of guitar soldering). The thin stuff (Kester) does work well when soldering humbucker covers back on. I also really recommend NOT using cloth push-back wiring. It's too unwieldy for this fine wiring project. A good 22g stranded vinyl covered wire works best for me. And I do recommend following the advice in the video and wire the switch first. I put mine in a nut vice. Rock on with your bad self!

Very fragile

By

Verified Buyer

I went through two of these switches and eventually settled on the Fender super switch. The oak grisby is incredibly fragile, and even slightly overheating the solder lugs will mess it up. Also the solder lugs should be bent the other way, because the ones at the ends are in the way of the mounting screws, and the supplied mounting screws are long enough that they'll touch the lugs and short it out. You can bend the lugs out of the way, but again it's very fragile and easily breaks. The Fender super switch has none of these issues.

Nice mod

Wish a prewired version was available. I have made thousands of solders. pre cut to length all your jumpers, then solder. make sure you wire the guitar leads to the correct end. I installed in a squier tele, it bottoms out in the squier. Pre fit to cover and body first. Some relief maybe needed in cavity. Good Mod.

It works, finally

By

The switch is very difficult to solder onto; contacts are quite close, but its understandable because it has to fit into the space the regular 3 position switch is designed to fit in. Now, I'm sure it's my own fault, but somehow, (I still don't know the problem), the switch worked fine before I screwed it onto the mounting plate, but even after having had to enlarge the slot for the lever, and widen the distance between the mounting holes of the plate, when mounted only positions 2 and 4 worked. I pondered the problem, and examined the switch finding no obvious defects in my soldering, I knew the problem must be the switch was grounding on the plate, so the solution was to completely insulate the switch from the plate.
Let me just say it wasn't easy to do: gluing cardboard under the plate and very narrow plastic strips along the edges of the slot, and I even had to glue the switch in position, because the screws grounded the switch. No touching of the plate with any part of the switch! So, I did it and now the switch works beautifully.
I'm sure also that if I had studied the instructions better, the possible sounds available from all the possible combinations of the switch, would open up many more options than even the ones described in the video.
So, to conclude, solder very carefully, modify the mounting plate if needed, and pray you don't have the problem I had. The results are worth the trouble.

Nice mod for my Mexican Tele

By

Fun project. Initially I had some grounding issues which was resolved by bending a few of the posts just a bit more (contact with a post and the base of the rocker switch). The switch worked while not on the control plate, but did not when mounted on the plate. Also the screws seemed a bit long, so they where cut shorter. Fun new sounds.

I look foward to installing this to give a bit more personality to my telecaster.

HH Options

I used this switch to replicate the standard Ibanez 5-way switching for HH guitars. It worked really well! This switch is much more robust than the standard Ibanez PCB switch, plus the switching action feels much more firm and solid. Highly recommended!

This has to be the easiest to use super 5-way switch on the market.
