A rare Japanese hardwood with bold figure and a look unlike anything else on the bench.

Kuri (Castanea crenata), also known as Japanese Chestnut, is a traditional hardwood used in fine woodworking throughout Japan. It is rarely seen in modern guitar building, and material suitable for instrument tops is exceptionally difficult to source.

This small collection represents something particularly uncommon. These tops feature heavy, pronounced figure that is not typically associated with this species, creating a level of visual movement that immediately stands out. Kuri is usually appreciated for its grain and color, making figure like this an unexpected and rare characteristic.

Visually, Kuri offers a warm, natural palette with tones ranging from light golden brown to deeper, earthy hues. The figure adds depth and shimmer across the surface, giving each top a dynamic, almost three-dimensional quality. The overall effect is distinctive without feeling overworked, making it well suited for both classic and more modern builds.

Structurally, Kuri is stable and workable, making it a practical choice for drop tops. It pairs well with a variety of body woods and finishing approaches, whether the goal is a natural look, a burst, or something more contemporary.

We have only five of these tops available. Material like this is rarely encountered, and once these are gone, we do not expect to find more.
