A rare Japanese tonewood with extraordinary figure, taken to another level with spalting.
Tochi (Aesculus turbinata), also known as Japanese Horse Chestnut, is a traditional Japanese hardwood with a long history in fine woodworking and instrument making. It is rarely seen in modern guitar building, and high-quality material suitable for tops is exceptionally difficult to source.
We recently offered a small batch of high-flame Tochi acoustic guitar sets. They sold out in a matter of hours, and we do not expect to see material like that again. This collection comes from the same limited source, and once these are gone, the opportunity will be gone with them.
What makes these tops particularly special is the combination of high flame and natural spalting. The result is a striking visual contrast of depth, movement, and organic pattern that makes each top completely one of a kind.
Visually, these sets rival the finest figured maples, with a creamy, even base color brought to life by deep curl and intricate spalting lines. The interplay between flame and spalting creates a level of visual complexity that stands out even among high-end electric builds.
Structurally, Tochi is lightweight and stable, making it an excellent choice for drop tops where visual impact and workability both matter. These tops pair well with a wide range of body woods and finishes, from natural and burst finishes to more modern, high-contrast treatments.
