3/8" Conversion Tuner Bushing

About This Item

Round and hex shape bushings for adapting 1/4" string posts to fit larger pegholes. Set of 6.

Conversion bushing example
Adapts 1/4" string post to fit larger pegholes.
Our special tapered knurled press-fit brass bushings lets you install Waverly or other tuning machines with 1/4"-diameter string posts into 3/8" or 10mm pegholes (Gotoh/Grover/Schaller) with no redrilling.

Note: these conversions bushings will not work on instruments with 10.5mm pegholes. Measure the tuner hole diameter prior to ordering.

For a perfect fit, we recommend the #2065 Peghead Bushing Reamer (.393" diameter) to cut a clean, accurate counterbore.

Homemade bushing puller to protect the peghead

Dan Erlewine needs to pull the tuner grommets/bushings from the peghead of this old Gibson. The lacquer is already damaged, and pulling the bushings can yank finish off too. Dan rigs a jig that holds the finish down while the bushing comes up.

These are well made. The size is accurate to the description. You need to be very accurate on your measurements as the fit needs to be fairly tight for them to work correctly.

LP Grover change out

By

I wanted to give my LP Classic headstock more of a retro look since it is a goldtop with P90’s. The Grovers are great tuners but I wanted the Kluson tuners without the big washers. The conversion bushings made the job easy. Glad they are available, thanks StewMac

I have not had the opportunity to use these yet but I'm sure they will do the job quite well. They're nicely finished and I've never purchased anything from StewMac that has disappointed me. The products they sell are always high quality. I'm banking that these will be also.

Awesome upgrade for import guitars!

Removing tuning machines from import guitars, only to find a dog's-breakfast of poorly drilled, loose-fitting holes? These bushings are AWESOME!

They look good, and are a great companion for the vintage Kluson-Style tuners out there. I do a lot of upgrades on cheap imports going to those tuners and often need to retrofit the pegheads to take the narrow posts. I keep a variety of sizes and finishes of these bushings on hand in my shop to keep me ready for the randomness that imports bring. That said, take your time, measure your holes, and SLOWLY ream, if necessary, to get a snug fit.

Best Of Both Worlds

I recently purchased a used 2009 Epiphone J-200 copy. I never cared much for this style in the past but everything about this one really caught my eye. It even appeared to have a set of Rotomatics on it (which are one of my favorites). Turned out to be a very well-made set of MIC copies which probably had something to do with their condition. Not sure what was up with them but these tuners were crusty. I'm leaning towards the guitar having spent some time near the ocean. They were chrome plated but somehow were covered in this white powdery corrosion. All the while the rest of the guitar showed no evidence of any other corrosion anywhere. After thinking it over, I decided it would look better with the old keystone button tuners that many J-200's sported in the 50's and early 60's. I knew exactly where to look. For anyone thinking about converting to these from a Grover style, you can't go wrong with these bushings. Aside from the obvious issue of the extra holes from mounting screws, you can go from one tuner to the other without a trace. Most of the time these extra holes are covered and if not, are nearly unnoticeable. Not recommended for priceless vintage instruments but that probably goes without saying. Looks great also. Any questions, watch the video linked to the product page. Thanks.

Perfect fit

By

Great fit and product. I am very pleased that I could restore my 1965 Firebird to the original Kluson tuners with this bushing. As with many vintage guitars, players changed tuners to Grovers and Schallers and drilled larger holes. Only one critique, the aged bushings are almost black. I probably would have gone for the nickel choice had I known how dark they are. Regardless, project complete.

Poor Relic

By

The bushing fit nicely and did their job but the the relic was really bad. It looked like they were just sprayed with black paint. (See pic, conversion bushing is on left next to original). Customer service was excellent though very timely response and they refunded my purchase.
