String Action Gauge

About This Item

Fast, accurate measurements for setups.
Our String Action Gauge is a "Swiss Army Ruler" for setup adjustments on any stringed instrument.

This pocket-size stainless steel rule has become a luthier's favorite in busy shops. It's the best way yet to get vital measurements on acoustic and electric instruments.
• String height
• Bridge saddle height
• Saddle slot depth
• Fret slot depth (unbound fingerboards)
• Nut height
• Pickup polepiece height

No more "three-and-a-half-64ths or 3/32" plus one of those little lines." This gauge measures in ways that regular rulers can't.
—Dan Erlewine

Developed here at Stewart-MacDonald by Dan Erlewine and Don MacRostie, the gauge features a progressive string height scale: simply slide it across the frets and read the measurement under the string. It's faster to use than any ruler, and stays parallel to the fingerboard—much easier than trying to hold a ruler perpendicular to a rounded fret.

StewMac's String Action Gauge has two models (sold separately) for measuring in inches or millimeters. The string height markers are graduated from .010" to .140" on the inch model, and from 0.25mm to 3.50mm on the metric version.

The back of the gauge has a time-saving fractional/decimal/metric conversion chart.

The String Action Gauge is made of durable stainless steel with precision-etched markings, and fits right in your pocket.

Tip: You can use the gauge to set router depth, instead of a shop ruler. It sits solidly on your router base, with the scale right where you need it.

It cuts the frets

By

Verified Buyer

If you move it ever so slightly on the frets during setting up string action, the corners are so sharp they cut through the frets. Stewmac should round the corners over at least at this one side but they don't. For this price, I would expect it at least to not damage my instrument.

Precisely what I needed

The Stew Mac string action gauge is the perfect tool for adjusting string height on our ukuleles. When I tried to sand down the bone saddle in the past, it was more guesswork and trial and error. But I have adjusted two ukuleles since getting this gauge, and I have been able to be precise and consistent. I use the tool, but my wife loves it. They are her instruments, after all!

It will do the job but it's very hard to read you have a grey/black tool trying to use to read lines below a silver/grey gutar strings

These are even better than before!

I already have the standard gauge and love it. When the metric gauge arrived I was pleasantly surprised to find it to be twice as thick as the standard gauge I have had for a few years.

The Best Way to Measure String Action

By

Verified Buyer

I adjust my own neck and action and have tried numerous rulers and thickness gauges. This little StewMac String Action Gauge aligns itself, is very accurate, and is easy to use on all strings, not just the outside strings. I find it indispensable and use it often. I adjust on feel, but like to compare the settings I have (which are a bit high because I do a lot of blues string bending) to what others use. Be sure to read the instruction sheet to get the most out of it. The top of the lines AND the bottom of the lines are both calibrated! It is very clever and very easy to use. They call it a "Swiss Army Ruler. That is a good name for it.

Nice gauge

By

I had the metric version but started doing a lot of setups on guitars (Gibson, Fender) with recommended string heights in 1/64s. Both gauges are very nice, although I wish the graduated gauge was in 64ths as well instead of hundredths, but still, nice guage.
