Precision Router Base Complete Set

About This Item

Designed especially for stringed instrument work. Our exclusive design provides excellent control when routing for binding and inlays.

SAVE when you buy this complete set including:
  • Precision Router Base
  • Edge Guide
  • 5/16" router bit for binding
  • Air pump with hose
Our sturdy, compact base is the best way to hold a Dremel for freehand routing, inlaying, widening fret slots, and more. Made of machined steel, brass and aluminum, it features precision cutting depth adjustment with large thumbwheels to eliminate guesswork.
  • Excellent control
  • Easy installation
  • Accurate freehand routing
Sturdy, compact, and adjustable
Each turn of the large knurled thumbwheels adjusts your Dremel's cutting depth by .035" (.889mm). You can rout an inlay cavity that's precisely compensated for the thickness of the pearl and glue, for less sanding later.

Tall twin handles give you excellent control for freehand routing, and you get a good view of your work. There's even a built-in nozzle for attaching a mini air pump to continuously blow away the dust—you'll rout inlay cavities more precisely, for a better fit requiring less filler.

Complete set includes:

Precision Router Base
For sturdy, accurate freehand routing
Binding Edge Guide
To cut smooth, clean binding channels up to 3/8" thick
Router Bit for Binding
Small diameter is ideal for tight curves
Mini Air Pump
Keeps the cutting area free of dust

And here's a tip from Dan Erlewine: clamp the Dremel and router base upside-down on your workbench, and use the bottom of the router base as a mini drum sander, as Dan Erlewine did for a Gibson L-1 archtop bridge in this issue of our Trade Secrets Newsletter.

Installation is easy.
Simply unscrew the threaded plastic collar on the nose of the Dremel, and screw on the Precision Router Base. Its 3/4-12 thread fits:
Dremel 4000, 400XPR, Professional, MultiPro and most corded models made since 1986
Black & Decker Wizard and RTX
Our Foredom custom handpiece

Make your Dremel a more versatile guitar shop tool.

Worth Every Penny - Was concerned about the price and then I got it!

As someone knew to lutherie, I was concerned that the base set was more expensive than the router itself. That said, the quality is fantastic and it made the job of trimming the front and back precise and easy. I am SO GLAD I made the investment as it will be used many times in the future as I am hooked on the building process!!!

Prefect for removing old bindings on vintage archtop restoration

By

I have a 1955 Kay Model 40 archtop guitar which needed neck set and binding work. All of the body bindings needed to be removed and replaced. The vintage celluloid binding had dried up and were shrinking and crumbling. The neck was completely off the guitar.
This binding trim base was just what I needed to make the repair. It worked better than I had hoped. I was able to remove the old bindings, cut and clean the surface for my replacement bindings in one step. Slowly and carefully the work was performed on body both back and front.
I used hide glue for installing the new bindings, securing the bindings in place with rubber bands and painters tape as needed. After installation was completed, I let is cure for 48 HRS then removed the bands and tape. Set the neck with hide glue and let is set for 72 HRS before removing the clamps. Here is a photo of he finished guitar.

Precision router base and guide

Unit exceeded my expectations for doing the binding cuts...I made up a 15 degree shim for the base, and used the nuts, that bolts the neck on, to shim the guide down enough to do the neck end of the body...Lucky, I had longer guide mounting screws...still had to be careful and keep the unit upright when cutting...Thanks....JVW.....Daytona FL

Router guide with room for improvements

By

I've got this set and i use it for both the rosette channel routing and for routing the binding channels on my classical and flamenco guitars. For the rosette channel routing it works quite well, given the borders of the rosette channel were pre-cut with a rosette cutting knife in order to avoid pull outs.
For the routing of the binding channels the tool is what i would call "suboptimal". The thing is that on a classical guitar, you allways have the top and the back slightly domed. With the tool you've got the router base with a rather large surface and the router base extension with a rather tiny spacing disc. Both of it are in a 90° angle to each another, but the guitar edge is not 90° but maybe 91 or even 92°. So with this tool it is almost impossible to keep the router totally vertical during routing, although this is critical. So in my opinion the router base extension should have be much longer, at least 1 inch long, in order to offer enough guidance. The router base itself should be free floating. In this case you just make sure your spacer ring is attached firmly to the sides of your guitar and your routher would be correctly vertical during routing.

I hope those smart guys at Stewmac will find a useful solution for this problem and improve this tool.

This is an excellent tool for my type of woodworking . I have been looking at the similar ones made of some type of plastic and knew they were too flexible . The air pump could use a flexible nozzle to direct the air to a precise target . But overall , just what I needed .
