Doesn't work for Five Star tuner

By

Verified Buyer

I bought this expensive tool to install a Fiver Star geared tuner in a banjo that previously had a friction peg. The end diameter is too small for the geared tuner - the reamer hits the truss rod before it has reamed the hole out big enough. I wrapped a piece of sand paper around the ream and was successful in installing the tuner but the reamer was basically worthless

I used this tool to open up the 8 mm potentiometer holes to 3/8" in the top of an archtop thinline hollow body guitar. Worked great and only took a few minutes.

I used this to install a Five-Star 5th String Banjo Peg, also from StewMac. It worked super well with that peg. My application was non-traditional (it was to adapt a lap steel to be more like the Indian instrument, the mohan veena, for which I needed to add an additional string).

Had to modify it to make it work....

I was installing a Gotoh 5th string tuner on a 90's Gibson banjo. The Gotoh tuner base is slightly wider than the original tuner thus it needed a reamer to make the hole slightly larger in order to make it fit.

Started using this reamer and it hit the metal truss rod in the neck.

I had to use my dremel tool to trim the tip of this tool so it wouldn't grind away the truss rod.

Once I completed that the tool worked great.

This helped me upgrade the broken tuners on a banjo in a pinch. Higher quality than anticipated and worked better for me than marking a drill bit.

I really needed to change out the fifth string peg on my Epiphone long neck banjo, and this tool was a must have. I was able to enlarge the hole for the peg with ease and replace the peg. Great tool to have.

Replaced an atrocious 5th string tension peg that was bad even when it was new 50 years ago. I was scared to death that I'd make the hole too big for the 5 star geared peg I got to replace it with. Everything went smooth as butter. Essential for any string instrument enthusiast's toolbox.

Used this to ream out the hole in an old banjo to replace the old tension peg with a new geared (5-Star brand) peg. Did the job with no problem, and the new peg went in for a perfect fit.

Excellent tapered reamer

Sharper than the last tapered reamer I bought from the local hardware store. The cut off end makes it perfect for enlarging potentiometer holes on a import semi-hollow.

Slightly small.

I used this reamer to enlarge my banjo fifth string peg hole, and after the reamer reached the depth needed to install the new peg, it was still too tight, and I didn't want to drill farther because it was hitting metal inside the banjo neck. Therefore the reamer should be slightly bigger for the peg that it is advertised for.
