StewMac Spool Clamp - Set of 6

About This Item

The classic spool clamp with a new twist: this is a big improvement!

The simple spool clamp—two short wooden spools on a long threaded bolt with wingnut tightening—has long been a familiar tool for soundboard/back assembly and repair. We wondered, could it be made faster and less fiddly to use? (After all, glue won't wait forever.) The answer came from clamps refined by StewMac's Don MacRostie for use in his own shop: replace the wingnut with a finger-friendly hardwood handle. Now a quick spin of the lower spool closes the clamp, and an easy turn of the handle applies the pressure.

Better than the classic spool clamps:
• Smooth and precise pressure adjustment
• Sturdy hardwood spools are lined with protective cork
• Tubing on the rod protects the instrument from scratches

These high quality clamps are sold in sets of 6. Complete acoustic guitar assembly typically requires at least four sets. For mandolin, violin and ukulele assembly, simply trim the protective tubing as needed for tighter closure.

Maximum opening: 5-1/4" (133.35mm)
Clamping depth: 9/16" (14.29mm)
Handle length: 4" (101.6mm)

Worked out very well.

I ordered these to glue a lifting back on an old Uke. They worked exactly as I imagined.

Very good, but they do need minor improvements. These are best I have found without making my own.

The cork is poor quality. I prefer SOLID pure cork that is graded for saxophone repair, with leather against the guitar. I also drilled small holes into the handles so a small wrench bar can be used to apply a little bit more torque, and some small plastic caps on the ends of the threaded rod are a must. I buy 3/4" 1", 1 1/2', 1 3/4", & 2" inch hardwood dowels. I use a center finder with a combination square drill the centers, punch cork & leather for the pads. I epoxy 1/4" 28 UNF fine thread T nut into the bottom spool side, and double nut the lower spool. The pads are cork on wood with LEATHER over the cork. The ends of the threaded rod all have cap nuts dipped in hot thermoset plastic Dip It & countersunk, so no scratched benchtops or guitars. The threaded rod goes up inside the handles. A small hole near the top has a brass tube set into it, so a small drill bit or rod can be used for a little extra leverage, and the fine thread 1/4 inch rod makes it easier to adjust with more precision. If you don't have time to make really great spool clamps, these are as good as they come without paying a fortune for bespoke spool clamps. I charge between $72 & $600 for a set of 6 clamps. Purpleheart with leather over pure cork on hard Acacia Ironwood clamping faces, and rock maple handles would cost $240 for a set of 6, or $2600 for a set of 78 clamps for guitar, & a set shorter clamps for thinner instruments like violins, thinline archtops & mandolins. My first supreme hardwood set was hard Japanese temple ash with hornbeam faces padded with cork, & leather with rock maple handles, and a Rosewood tensioning wrench. My very first set was made with old closet rod dowel hardwood. Back in the day you could get a 72 long inch 1 5/8 inch diameter closet rod made out of solid mahogany. If you want silver inlays in rosewood, with maple faces, and tintul handles with polished sterling caps... I also make nice gun stocks too.

Love these clamps

I recently purchased a vintage Harmony archtop . The binding is cracked and missing, and the top began delaminating at various spots along the edge. Thes spool clamps were perfect for gluing the loose edges. The next phase will be replacing the binding.

Worked perfectly.

Used the clamps to secure the cracked sides of an old Harmony Archtop while repair dried. Then used them for glue up of the back to the body. The clamps are designed well, and the handles make tightening very easy, without all the fiddling, and wishing you had a third hand.

I bought one set of 6 to repair a 12 string that had the top lift off around the lower bout. I will be buying more in the very near future.

good enough for the purpose

Used on an old violin, I should have used 18 clamps, but 12 will due. Hope to find other uses for them.

Quicker is better!

Getting set-up to glue a top or back on an instrument is time consuming, but the rewards are worth it, especially when using hide glue. The new Stew Mac spool clamps are fast to adjust, fast to clamp down, and have that ”feel” that indicates “tight enough”. I have older clamps, different clamps, and custom made cauls for even distribution of pressure. None of those beat these newer spool clamps. When it comes to micro adjustments while glueing these clamps are tops. They cannot go too far into the top, no one clamp covers too much area, and slacking a bit to make adjustments is super easy. Most of my work is with older instruments and hide glues. These clamps make re fastening irregular, age changed parts as easy as it can be. Still, nothing beats a dry run or two to see that no surprises await the final assembly. A last comment; the workmanship and quality of these spool clamps is worthy of the finest shop anywhere.

Great clamps -

These work great, although I remember my first thought was "where am I going to store them?" in a small shop. So, here's a fast, easy, and cheap solution to keep them safe and out of the way. Happy building...Mark

This was my first repair job and these did the trick. Some of the cork was broken off when they arrived but still worked fine.
