Nut File Backer

About This Item

Get a grip on thin files!
Stop those skinny files from jumping, wandering, and bending.

Comfortable grip for easy, accurate slotting
Gauged Nut Slotting Files are great, but the thin ones can be tough to hold. It's hard to start a slot without the file chattering or drifting off your line—one small mistake can ruin a new nut. The handy Nut File Backer acts like a spine, stiffening the file for a straighter, more accurate cut. And it's much easier to hold on to: no more slipping and sliding on a slick nut or saddle.

Easy alignment and no more bent files
It's important to hold your files perfectly horizontal when filing new slots, and this backer makes it easy to tell when your alignment is just right. The file is supported along its entire length—you'll never need to worry about bending your files.

How it works
Simply slide your file into the backer, tighten the 4 hex screws, then file away! Switching out files is a breeze. Just loosen the screws, swap the files, and you're ready to go.

    Features:
  • More accurate filing with no slipping
  • Better grip with greater control
  • Cuts faster
  • Prevents thinner files from bending
  • Narrow backer holds files up to 0.020" (0.508mm)
  • Wide backer holds files up to 0.056" (1.142mm)

Dimensions: 5" x 1/2" (127mm x 11mm)

Designed for use with Gauged Nut Slotting Files. Get one for every file you use! Files not included.

A Must Have

This file backing tool is a must have for the lighter narrow files. Gives you full control without the file flexing all over when cutting or make a nut slot deeper or wider. Another handy tool from Stew Mac

I purchased these backers in both sizes.
I find them as per advertised ,very good to work with - no more sore fingers and bent files ( especially in the smaller gauges.)
They also speed up the filing of the slot as you get even pressure on the file backer..
Great addition to your nut making kit.
Cheers JT Australia.

Wow, Nut File Backers

Expecting plastic, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were metal. The do exactly as you would want, hold your nut slotting files straight and true. Maybe not so important with the thicker files, but certainly a potential "nut saver" when used with the thinner files. Another great product from StewMac!

No hex key included - seriously?

The good -
It's nicely machined - the only difference between the 2 versions is the width of the slot, so if you buy them based on the sizes of your files you're all set. 4 screws hold the files securely, and the slot is deep, but sadly not quite deep enough to allow some "rough gauging" of the cut depth with the body of the holder itself. IMO it's a mod Stew-Mac should consider.

The not-so-good -
I bought seven of these because I did not want to have to flip files constantly - and I did not receive a single hex key. Which, BTW, is a snug 1/16th inch or a slightly loose but serviceable 1.5mm (might want to note that in the text, S-M). Now, one might say "Well, that's a common size anyone should have" - to which I'd say I just paid 75 bucks for some aluminum bars with slots and holes in them - it should include a key with every tool, or at least with sets of 2 or more.

The best!

These backers make the files comfortable to use and completely solve the previously unavoidable problem of thin files feeling flimsy. Order six of them to cut down on the time of swapping out files. The only upgrade would be a hole through one end so I can easily store them all on one hook, they do not stick to my magnetic strip.
