StewMac Z-File Fret Crowning Files

About This Item

Next generation fret files
A whole new idea for crowning frets. Z-Files™ won't mess up your carefully-leveled fret tops because they only touch the sides of the frets.

Won't cause string buzz
After you've leveled the frets for uniform height, your crowning file restores their rounded shape, leaving the thinnest possible line of leveled surface on top. This is when other crowning files can accidentally scrape the fret top, creating a buzzing low spot.

Z-Files don't have this problem—because they don't touch the top of the fret.

    Z-File features:
  • Fast cutting 300-grit diamond abrasive
  • Unique angled cutting edges work the sides, not the tops

Three versions for any working style:

Original Z-File
Two diamond edges speed the work, shaping both sides of the fret at once. Offset angles shape the fret higher on one side while the other side works lower. Use one side of the file, then flip it to the other side.

Safe Edge Z-File
Offset shape like the Original, but with a smooth, non-cutting safe edge to ride on the fret, guiding your strokes as you cut just one side of the fret.

Centered Z-File
Two diamond edges in a centered V-shape cut both sides of the fret at the same angle. Simple to use and fast working.

Sold individually or SAVE when you buy the set of 3 files.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire*. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.
*Excludes our original Fret Tang Nippers. We recommend our Deluxe Fret Tang Nippers for stainless-steel fretwire.

Works for Me So it Must Be Good

I am a beginning "fretter", but I have leveled, crowned, and polished 4 necks in my guitar collection with excellent results. Watch the videos, invest in good tools, and take your time. This file makes it easy to re-shape the fret crowns after leveling them, without touching the very tops. Do several strokes, flip the file over and do the same number of strokes, and watch your Magic Marker line get thinner and thinner.

I was hesitant to spend this much money on another fret file but an very happy now that I did. I've only done one job with it and it work very well. Easy to file to a thin blue line and fast. I would only caution that it probably changes the fret profile pretty fast so be aware of that.

Great tool but shot life span

Got this Z file tool almost a year ago and its great at first cause it helped to speed up all my crowning jobs but now the diamond grit is smoothing out and it doesn't shape the frets as fast anymore. Compared to other diamond files that I've been using that lasted me atleast 2-3 years. Hope stewmac can improve on the life span of the tool

Around the shop, we say "pay StewMac now or pay him later". Prices are seriously crazy, but no other choice..

Still up in the air...

I just finished a level/crown/polish on Fender medium jumbo frets (my first L/C/P on wider frets). Now I will say, I had to remove a lot of material to level them, so the flats were substantial. I am used to using a rounded fret end file for crowning, but it was bothering my arthritis. Today I did the job, but I found the Z-file made it more difficult to shape the fret than my old file. It definitely was quicker and easier, and I am sill learning how to "rock" it,

I also found that it indeed does remove material down to the fingerboard. but I find it kinda striates the frets leaving longitudinal grooves. My old fret file tends to leave a smoother fret which makes polishing quicker and easier. So far, the only improvement I see is that it makes crowning quicker and polishing slower. But as I said above, these were heavily worn, wider frets than I am used to. We'll see - I may send it back for two new fret-end files!

It seemed a little pricey when I bought it but I like the tool so much I don't remember what it cost. It was really worth it because it works so well.
