StewMac Precision Fret Puller

About This Item

Get ready for the smoothest fret removal ever!
Improved chip-stopping performance, control, and comfort.

  • Jaw tips are precision-ground to the perfect angle (detailed below).
  • Better visibility of the work through the larger throat opening.
  • Longer handles are more comfortable—our hands thanked us after a full fret removal.

"The shallow grind gets right under the fret ends for easy walk out removal." — StewMac's R+D Team

We tested various designs and jaws to find the ultimate angles for extraction. Our Precision Pullers are meticulously ground to our specifications.

The outer face is ground and polished to be flush with the fingerboard, and glide under the fret crown edge.

Inner jaw tips are ground to a 45-degree angle to gently nudge the fret free of its slot as the jaws close. By carefully exerting less force on the fret wire, the smoother action eliminates unwanted chipping, especially if you've loosened the glue a bit with a warm soldering iron.

When working with dry and difficult fretboards, use the Precision Pullers with our Chip Stoppers for an extra layer of confidence in a chip-free and hassle-free job.

Do not use pullers to cut fretwire—the custom ground jaws can be damaged if used for anything other than pulling.

  • Smooth spring action for excellent control
  • Comfortable rubberized handles
  • Sturdy steel construction
  • Overall length: 6"
  • Throat depth: 1"
  • Face width: 3/8"

Worked super well on a Deering Goodtime Banjo

I am converting Deering Goodtime tenor banjo I have to be fretless (I play Indian classical music on it, need to be able to slide between notes). I used these to pull the frets (along with the chip stoppers--there was a bundle where you could buy both). I used the smaller gauge of the chip stopper (0.010) There was no chipping, they worked extremely well (though keep in mind on this banjo there is no fret glue and the neck is made of a very stiff rock maple, so probably easier use case than average). The surface of the nippers that is towards the fret board is extremely smooth and in one place where I couldn't fit in the chip stopper as easily, and the nippers were directly against the fret board, they did no damage.

Been using the old StewMac fret puller about 10 years, this new version is a step up in performance. The chip stoppers work nicely too.

Just got a set of these and pulled a few frets from an old ebony board, I can't put them down. They feel really beautifully made with great grips.

The grind on them is impeccable and you couldn't get a mosquito's dangly bits between any of the joints!

I cant not speak highly enough.

And of course living in the UK I really appreciate the totally faultless service from all at Stewmac.

Awesome!

Superb!

I just pulled the frets on a 50 year old guitar with old, leveled-down frets. In my experience, that means a wrestling match but the Precision Fret Puller was just amazing. Soooo much better than the other 2 pullers I own.

Expect to save time and reduce damage with this tool.

I have and have had many fret pullers over time and this one is by far the best. Works great without marking or scratching the fingerboard. And makes the process of removing frets faster. Love it!

Best fret puller yet

Precision is the right word for this tool, it grips fret ends no matter how low or tightly they are seated. A nice improvement over the previous version, which was also good.

Beautiful tool that does a beautiful job! Not knocking the original fret puller, but this guy is worth the little bit of extra dough. Fewer chips, cleaner job.
