Fret/Fingerboard Leveling Files

About This Item

These custom-made files give you a handle on your fret work!

These files work quickly to level frets or fingerboards, leaving a smooth finish.

Each file is 1" wide with a comfortable hardwood handle. The 6" length is for general use, and the 3" length is for spot leveling.

The fret leveling files have single-cut teeth with a steeper angle to eliminate "chatter." They cut faster and smoother than most fret leveling files we've used, they work quickly, and they're great for dressing and beveling fret ends.

The fingerboard leveler is a double-cut file for ebony, rosewood and pearl inlays. Despite its rough appearance, it leaves a smooth finish.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire*. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.
*Excludes our original Fret Tang Nippers. We recommend our Deluxe Fret Tang Nippers for stainless-steel fretwire.

Awesome but one thing to be careful of...

With the single cut version, watch your pressure when you're doing sharp fret ends sticking out, the single cut could make the file ride up onto the tops.

Finally!!!

I've been using a questionably precise level and sandpaper for what seems like a decade. I really wanted a level that i can just grab at a moments notice and level. Honestly i don't do a ton of leveling, on average probably one fret level every other year. Its always a pain cutting the sandpaper just right and masking off the level so i can use CA glue to stick down the sandpaper etc etc etc. Currently im working on a telecaster build and i haven't done the nitro finish yet so i haven't been able to use this file for leveling as its intended but i was able to use it to round the fretboard edges and knock off the excess fret material. Worked fantastically and above all else was quick and painless!

THE Fix for fret sprout

Stop living with fret sprout. This file works wonders in a few seconds. Sure, it costs a little more but you wont regret it. Quality old school craftsmanship and attention to detail went into this file. This was my first Stewmac purchase. I am a believer.

Great overall tool

Works exactly as promised, very helpful when restoring a guitar neck that has been in storage too long and needs touch up along its entire length

Very comfortable in the hand.

This works very well, just be careful to be gentle. The file is surprisingly aggressive, it would be easy to remove a great deal of fret very very quickly. So, apply little to no pressure until you get a little practice/experience.

My First Fret Dressing Job

By

My place is really dry so my MIM Stratocaster suffered from a bad case of fret sprout. I removed the bulk of the frets sticking out using the 6" Fret Leveler. I finished the job fit the Fret End Dressing file. I'm very happy with the end result. It was my first fret dressing job, so I found some good tutorials and proceeded very carefully.

Expensive, but not giving it up.

I bought the 6inch fret leveler. It is expensive, but after a few fret jobs, it feels like it has always been there and isn't going anywhere.

Which one? All three!

I use this fret leveling file often and extensively when it comes to spot leveling. This tool is still holding up 5-6 years later as these seem to get better with usage and chatter less over time. Only recently did I purchase the fingerboard leveler and smaller fret leveler so now I have all 3. These are well made and come with a lovely unfinished white ash handle. I sealed mine with wipe-on poly to protect the grain and make it pop a little.

If asked which of the three I’d recommend, then my answer is to purchase all of them and give yourself different angles of attack in your repair arsenal.

Good stuff, folks!
