Side Bending Strap

About This Item

A flexible .012" stainless spring steel strap for covering a wet or steamed wooden instrument side when using the bending iron.

The strap supports the wood surface opposite the bending iron, traps moisture for easier bending and helps minimize wood split-out. It springs back flat for reuse. 4" x 24" for guitar.

Trade Secret: Sand guitar bodies with our Side Bending Strap.
Attach Stikit sandpaper and the strap becomes a flexible sander. Get dead-flat sides for cleaner binding channels with no humps or irregularities. Plus, less chance of sanding through when it comes time to finishing. Michael Greenfield explains in this video.

I found the bending strap to be very helpful when making the first, the sharpest bend, at the guitar rib's waist. It does a good job of holding in dampness while supporting the wood in that tight curve.
I found it less useful (not needed) when bending the curves for upper and lower bouts.
I'm happy to have it, it shines on that first bend on each rib.

I bought a set of these for use on my acoustic guitar bending jig. They are perfect for the application. I have been using Stewmac for all my guitar Needs and every single order has been perfect and the people at Stewmac are the best to deal with. I was in distribution and would have died to have the people Stewmac has running their warehouse. Thank you Stewmac.

Quality bending strap - no sharp edges. Does the job well. A little wide IMO, but allows for all width sides.

I wish I had not bought this item. I really don't need it. Oh well, my mistake.

If your bending by hand this is a must. Worked great in holding in the steam from the iron and wet towel combo I use and gave the back of the sides good support in the process. I had no cracks or tear out the wood practically melted into its shape.

A Must for Bending Difficult Wood

By

I purchased 2 Side bending straps to use with my manual, old school, bending iron. Up to this point, I've had another luthier bend my sides.

I was starting 3 builds. The most difficult wood was highly figured, old stock, Honduran rosewood. This stuff is stiff and as easy to crack as Brazilian rosewood. These sides were the first sides I've ever bent.

I placed a strap on each side of the wood. I sprayed water on the areas to be bent, on the inside. I successfully bent both sides, with no cracks or warping. I'm sure I would not have been so successful, if I'd tried to bend these sides without the straps. Figured wood wants to come apart on the outside of the bend areas, almost like a natural delamination.. The straps prevented this natural peeling, greekstick fracture.

I highly recommend the bending straps. Used 2 for difficult bends.

Bending Strap Essential

Great/essential/works like a charm. Would be nice also to have a strip only ~half the thickness, for making the REALLY tight curves on certain Renaissance instrument replicas.

Nice Strap. Too Big for most mandolin work.

This is a nice high quality spring steel strap. It could be nicer with handles. It is the perfect size for guitar work, but can't be used for all the required mandolin bends due to size.
