Japanese Fret Saw

About This Item

Our most efficient saw for fret slots! Handmade, each saw cuts on the pull-stroke. This traditional design reduces blade flex and jamming as you saw the slot.

A StewMac exclusive.
The craftsmanship and efficiency of traditional handmade Japanese woodworking saws are legendary. We are pleased to offer a unique example made specifically for cutting fret slots, complete with easy depth-of-cut adjustment. This is our smoothest, most efficient handsaw for fret work—it cuts FAST!

The thumbscrew-adjustable clear acrylic Depth Stop slides up and down for precise control of fret slot depth. It's removable for cutting off the ends of a blank fingerboard, or for use with our Fret Slotting Miter Box.

SAVE when you order our unique Fret Slotting Miter Box with your saw, and enjoy the most versatile fret slotting solution for the small shop.

TIP: The blade features extremely sharp teeth, with precise .023" kerf to match our fretwire. Because it cuts faster than a standard fret saw, it must be held perpendicular to the fretboard. If not, you can quickly cut a wider slot than you expect. We recommend our Fret Slotting Miter Box for keeping the saw in proper alignment.

Overall length 19-3/4" (501.65mm)
Cutting length 9-3/4" (247.65mm)
Blade depth 1-3/4" (44.45mm)
Rigid nickel-plated brass spine
Comfortable traditional bamboo handle

Cut accurate 90-degree slots when you use the saw with our Fret Slotting Miter Box. Add a Fret Scale Template and you'll never miscalculate your fret positions.

Works great.

I'd be happier if Stewmac sold a left handed version.........just kidding! I used it on a fret board that I change from a 12 to 9.5 radius. Took a little getting used to and the results were super.

Get what you pay for

I bought a regular western push-type fret saw on eBay for not much money. It lasted through one fret board before it was dull as a butter knife. This saw cost quite a bit more but much better quality, and easier to use. Don't be seduced, or turned off by price. With tools, you almost always get what you pay for.

It's bigger than I thought it would be, but it is a very good tool no less.
The adjustable depth guide is a purposeful way to increase your accuracy in sawing to the depth required for the particular fret slot.
Thank you.

Great saw, short life span.

I love the functionality of this saw. however, it does not last as long as the other style of fret saws. I cut maybe 20 boards before it was worn out. I purchased another to replace it, but I won't buy another one when this one dies. Hopefully Stew Mac will sell a replacement blade by then.

I absolutely love my new fret saw. The job went so much faster it was truly a joy. Sorry, but I'm not going back.

My go-to saw for manual fretting.

When I started making multi scale guitars, I bought this saw, and designed a very simple but versatile and accurate multi scale fret slotting jig around it. Perfect tool for the job.
The slots are perfect for all the fret wires I use, around .023. This saw cuts fast, clean, and accurate. Cutting on the pull stroke just makes more sense than cutting on the push stroke, as with Western saws. Once you try the Japanese method, you’ll likely stay with it for the long term.

I do wish it was possible to buy replacement blades, rather than replacing the whole tool. I just replaced my first one, which lasted a long time. Money well-spent!

Perfecto!

This saw is exactly what I need to cut fret slots and other fine details. With the depth guard I can cut perfect slots on a radiused neck. It's amazingly sharp and I keep the guard all the way down to protect the teeth when not in use. The deep design of the teeth tends to clear sawdust from the cut more efficiently. The long handle makes cutting more accurate than a short handle. What's not to love?

I have several different types of saws but didn't have one like this one. So far I've been quite happy with my purchase.
