Double-edge Fret File

About This Item

Our best-selling fret crowning file!
Precision-cut teeth for accurate fret shaping.

Each of our popular traditional 7-3/8" x 5/8" tool-steel files has two different 4" hollow-ground cutting edges, for recrowning a variety of fretwire sizes. These files were designed by luthiers for luthiers and are an economical way to get your fretting kit started. The handle is rubber-coated for comfort.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire*. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.
*Excludes our original Fret Tang Nippers. We recommend our Deluxe Fret Tang Nippers for stainless-steel fretwire.

Works great for first timer

It was my first time doing fret work. I used this together with the Fret Kisser and Fret Rocker. It was easy to use. The majority of the work was the Kisser I felt confident I was not removing too much material or removing unevenly. Good end result.

Must have for your bench!

Any serious tech or player who does his own need these in the tool box. A proper crown helps insure accurate intonation. Even some of the more expensive guitars I have had needed a touch-up. A good crown and a high shine make for smooth sailing and clean bends.

Fret file

Easy to use even the first time. You don't need a lot of pressure to get the fret tops rounded. Marking the top of the fret with a sharpie first will let you see your progress as you round the frets.

The Fret file I bought is AWESOME.. Stewmac has always set the standard.... I tried to save some money and bought a fret file on Amazon.. Completely unusable.. In nearly two decades.. I only had one bad experience with Stewmac

Ok just got the file and have only used it once. Shipping took a little longer than expected. It was easy to use and recrowned my frets perfectly. Could not be happier. Thanks stewmac!

Did the job

The file was able to re crown my frets, but only on one side. The other side doesn't do much of anything. I'm a bit bummed by that.

Successful First Crowning

By

I recently did my first fret level, crown and polish. Before taking on the project I did some research and watch some Stew Mac/Other videos. The sharpie trick allowed me to keep filing until there was only a thin line left. This file was intuitive to use and didn't effect my leveling job. Being patient allowed me to achieve a near new fret job without even having to remove a lot of material. Using this crowning file and a Stew Mac string on leveling bar allowed me to nearly break even on my first fret job. I will save a lot of money with future fret work.
