Double-edge Fret File

About This Item

Our best-selling fret crowning file!
Precision-cut teeth for accurate fret shaping.

Each of our popular traditional 7-3/8" x 5/8" tool-steel files has two different 4" hollow-ground cutting edges, for recrowning a variety of fretwire sizes. These files were designed by luthiers for luthiers and are an economical way to get your fretting kit started. The handle is rubber-coated for comfort.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Great files and great service

I have used these files for years, they work really well. The last one I purchased had a defect with the teeth. I contacted Stewmac and told the them of the problem and the next minute there's a new one on it's way to me no hassles. 2 thumbs up Stewmac.

Size matters

This tool works great when you have the right sized tool and frets that are near full height. Unfortunately I had to take a few of my frets down lower than this tool is really made for, at which point the tool doesn't work. In hindsight I might have bought the wide/jumbo size which I theorize would work better even if you have some very low frets. That's not the tool's fault, but it might be helpful if the description mentioned that the tool works best for frets at close to full height.

Good crowning file.

This file is good for crowning lower frets below the body of a guitar. Stew Mac makes this clear on their site and I agree. I still prefer my Gurien 3 piece file over this because it is easier to use and with the bent shaft easier along the body. Good crowning file though. It does last longer than the blades of the Gurien which is my only complaint on that one.

Great tool to have

After filing down the tall frets on my LP, I used this file and a 3 sides file to dress the frets before polishing. Well made tools! I masked the fingerboard with masking tape.

Great Tool

The tool saved me at least an hour of hard labor.
The tool was easy to use and removed the edges of the frets after leveling the frets.
This is the 6th tool that I have tried and this tool made the job easy.

Not impressed with this file

The issue I find with these files is that the profile radius is too large or flat which results in too much material being removed from the top of the frets before removing enough off the sides. I would suggest re-designing these files with a smaller radius which corresponds more with the profile of the fretwire. They also have a tendency to chatter which would be greatly reduced if it had a finer cut.

My second set - go-to fret files!

By

I bought my first fret file from Stewart Macdonald years ago, and finally wore it out.
Hard to believe, but it finally got dull and will not take off much if any metal anymore.

So I bought the double set this time. Covers more fret sizes.

Overall, they are generally my go-to fret files. I also have the triangle unit, and a quarter round unit, which works great, but for just crowning and getting off that little bit of flat where you just leveled with a radius block, these are the ticket.

In my humble opinion, fixing many guitars a month, these are a must have for any instrument repair person, making repairs on any neck, no matter what the stringed instrument.
