Build an instrument you can play today!
If you are new to uke but play guitar, you can play a baritone uke right away! Because it's tuned the same as the top 4 strings of your guitar—D, G, B, E, you already know how to play it. You'll be rocking on this little guy as soon as you've strung it up. And it makes a great first instrument for a child or new player.

Ukulele kit

I bought a solid koa kit and bashed it. I installed binding on the fret board, replaced the fret dots with hand sawn abalone dots, abalone around the sound board, a pearl inlaid hibiscus flower on the head stock (like the Martin version), and a compensated bridge. A wonderful kit and instrument. Thanks Stew-Mac!

Great kit

Really nice ukulele kit. Easy enough to build without needing lots of tools or experience. If you do have lots of tools and experience it's a piece of cake. Have a look at the building plan first. You're going to have x-bracing on this one, not van bracing. Also the braces are too short to reach the sides of the uke. It's good but not perfect.

Stew Mac Kits are top notch...

I'm a guitar builder and decided to get a couple of these to build for my granddaughter and daughter since I didn't have time to work from scratch. I was thrilled to have everything pre-cut and only took a week to finish. Just like all Stew Mac products, they were complete and well made. Fell together as expected and plays just like a hand made instrument. No snags, all the parts were there and fit perfectly. With a little creative wood burning they even look boutique. Thanks Stew Mac!

Great kit and excellent ukulele!

I received my tenor ukulele kit first week of January and finished April 16, 2021 with only weekend hours available to work on it. I had never built an instrument before and my woodworking skills are limited. I was unsure if I had the skills needed to produce a playable instrument. StewMac’s reputation for excellent customer service was probably the deciding factor in going ahead with the project.

I made a couple of rather large errors in the course of the build, and a dozen smaller ones. The tech support folks were very supportive and provided the answers I needed to address my mistakes.

The kit is logical and very well designed. The instructions are detailed and clear. Beyond that, the excellent 10 part video series allows you to watch each step being done before you tackle it.

The finished ukulele looks and sounds quite good, with easy playability. I am seriously enjoying this ukulele. I’m amazed that an inexperienced builder like me was able to create such a truly nice instrument! I’ve attached a few photos.

I’ve now ordered two more kits to build one for each of my children. Unfortunately, each of the new kits I received had some issues with the wooden parts and needed to be returned for exchange. I agree with another reviewer that while quality control could be a bit better, it becomes only a temporary inconvenience as the tech support folks are serious about assuring that you are satisfied, and will help you exchange any defective parts if needed.

The only other issue I can think of is that the tuning machines provided with the kit, while certainly functional, require that the pre-drilled holes are of diameter larger than the open-geared tuners I had planned to use. Smaller holes would allow a choice of tuning machines and could be enlarged if desired.

I totally enjoyed the building experience! I’m about to begin two more tenor ukes, and I plan to go on to a baritone after that. I have a new avocation!

When I received my kit I found a couple flaws in the parts. A quick couple of emails, I sent some pictures showing the issue and a replacement was sent. I received the second kit and it has no issues. Looking forward to putting it together.

Fantastic kit

Kit arrived to NI this morning (15 Mar), from USA (ordered on 28 feb).. Chose the 10-20 day delivery.
As I opened the kit all is as it should be with the beautiful smell of mahogany. I've checked everything is there, and it seems to be all quality parts.
I'm really looking forward to building this tenor uke, and then airbrushing the ol' hawaiian sunset on the back, before layering it to death with polyurethane varnish, and finally cut n' polishing it to a mirror shine!
Then I can concentrate on actually learning how to play the thing! At 40 year old, I'm hoping I've not left it to late to learn.. Time will tell

A nice kit for everyone who wants to build a decent instrument!

I bought the baritone uke kit in november 2020 and for some reason it had a really hard time arriving in Italy. It actually got lost twice, which wasn’t StewMac’s fault at all, and they were incredibly nice and sent me replacement packages until one finally arrived. They also did it at no additional charge, so I only have incredibly great things to say about their customer service.

The kit itself is great, it is of decent quality and the instructions are clear. One thing I noticed though is that some parts of the kit are cut a little off, as the bridge plate is way too small to fit between the x braces or the neck is not in any way symmetrical. I could fix those two things easily by fitting a new bridge plate and reshaping the neck, but maybe it’s something some folks would like to know. Also, the bracing plan on the baritone uke is a little funny, as some braces are too small for the uke. I cut some longer ones out of some scrap material and I think that technically you could also use the shorter ones as you get them. They will just fit into the uke without you having to cut out the notches in the linings then. Other than that I think it’s awesome that the kit now comes with a solid wood neck block. The top plate is thick enough to fit in a rosette if you want to, it has a nice grain pattern and also the laminate is of a good material. I had no problems with the veneer chipping out of the laminate while sanding or cutting it.

I think this kit is great for first time builders as well as advanced builders who want to build a good sounding instrument at low cost. And yes, the ukulele sounds way better than expected.

Good Product and Support but Quality Control is Weak

By

Verified Buyer

I have built over 20 StewMac ukulele kits so far and when done right and along with support that they seem willing to provide you can wind up with an excellent instrument. Musicians tell me that they have the sound quality of well-made commercial products. If you have good woodworking skills they can be beautiful looking as well. I have had to ask for replacement parts at times because they were badly cut or poorly sized or defective in some way. Their support people have complied with free replacements, so in that respect, the quality control issue is moot. The loss to the consumer is in time and effort, but you do gain the experience of doing it over. If you have done crafts or worked with wood and/or tools in the past, you can build a fine instrument with these kits. If not, it may be a challenge and you could end up with kindling.

Stew Mac is the best!

I ordered this uke kit for my son for Christmas, and there were some issues with the delivery. Stew Mac went over and above the call of duty to rectify the situation, and I couldn't be happier. I am half way through the build with my son, and we are really enjoying working on the project together. Looking forward to the final product!
