StewMac Ukulele Kits

About This Item

Ukulele's are one of the hottest instruments on the market right now, people love them and just can't get enough of them. They make a great place to start if you're a new builder looking for that first project. They're simple, easy and a ton of fun (plus, they sound amazing!)

No Woodworking Experience Required!
We give you detailed instructions and bracing plans to guide you through each step of the build, from start to finish!

To reduce spring-back and aid stability the back and sides are made from high quality mahogany laminates—this will go a long way to ensuring your first build is painless and enjoyable. Available in soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone sizes.

    Included with each kit
  • Solid mahogany top
  • Laminated mahogany back
  • Laminated mahogany sides
  • Fully shaped mahogany neck with two dowel pins for neck joint
  • Walnut fretboard, slotted and inlaid with position markers

  • Shaped string nut
  • Carved, drilled walnut bridge

  • Bridge plate
  • Full-size bracing plan
  • Instruction book

Build an instrument you can play today!
If you are new to uke but play guitar, you can play a baritone uke right away! Because it's tuned the same as the top 4 strings of your guitar—D, G, B, E, you already know how to play it. You'll be rocking on this little guy as soon as you've strung it up. And it makes a great first instrument for a child or new player.

Uke kit

This is a great kit but don't think that you'll be able to build it right out of the box. I had to spend $115 dollars at home depot for all the stuff need to actually build it. Sure, if you have dozens of clips, several clamps, just happen to have plywood sitting around and tite bond glue, eye hooks, chisels, sanding equipment etc etc then you'll be good. That being said, now that i have the tools, Im set to build and have a set up that will allow me to make more (which i will very likely do).
It's also not the most kid friendly kit so if you're planning to do it with your kids- have them be at least late school age- my 7 year old just wants to uke and is a little overwhelmed by all the steps and details needed.

I bought 4 of these soprano uke kits to make for my grandkids. I can't wait to give the uke's to them.

Great project during isolation

I bought this kit to have a little project to keep me busy while we are trying to stay home more for Covid-19. I built it for my wife who is learning the ukulele. My father in law had a kit and I decided to try my own. I have never built an instrument, but I used to build cabinets and have put together a few canoes. Minimal tools required and most came with the kit. I had some spare wood around to make the jigs. The only things I really needed were a couple of smaller clamps that I picked up from Harbor Freight and some sand paper. I used a wipe on poly from minwax although my father-in-law purchased the finishing and building kit from stewmac and liked it. In my opinion you can do it without it if you have some finishing knowledge. Instructions were clear, personally I used a combination of the instructions and the videos. Be sure to look at the photos in the instructions very well because it helps to see the size of blocks and how their jigs go together, which aren't necessarily written out but are clear if you follow the photos and instruction. It took me about 2 weeks to complete for about an hour each week night and about 4 or 5 hours on the weekends. Most of the time is waiting for the glue or finish to dry. It's a totally doable, fun project for any beginner in my opinion, and it sounds great when finished.

Completed project - very happy with the result

I had sent in a review a couple of weeks ago, noting some minor problems; after looking through the reviews on the kits, the primary problem (and fix) was noted in several other reviews. This gave me the direction for the fix, and (with a little patience) was able to move past the problem. One thought - take your time on measuring for the bridge, starting w/ the given measurement from the nut, then also use the alternative method (nut to 12th fret/12th fret to bridge plus a smidge) to fine tune the exact distance. With a proper setup on string height at the first fret, the intonation is very good, and plays very nicely.

BTW - my son-in-law saw the kit in process, was so excited that he immediately got the concert uke kit, and the day it arrived dropped everything else to work on it! He's a much more experienced wood-worker than I am, and I'm really looking forward to seeing his completed uke.

COVID father and son project

We're almost ready to apply finish, going with a gloss clear varnish rather than stain (I've never been happy my staining technique). The kit went together well, mahogany sound board a little warped, but it straightened up nicely when the struts went on. We built a baritone for the deeper sound, and splurged on better quality strings. Really excited to hear the sound quality. Added a few custom touches, walnut veneer on the tuning head and a few other places, but all the pieces go together rather well. Take your time and follow the instructions (which are great as are the videos). These folks know what they're doing when it comes to luthiering (is that a word?).

I got this as a gift for my dad for father's day. He really enjoyed it. It turned out great. Now he has to learn how to play it.

excellent kit - but running into problem w/ neck set - Concert Uke

By

I am really enjoying the build of the concert uke kit - nice wood and excellent directions; but have a bit of a problem w/ the neck set - the fingerboard (with the holes drilled at the correct distance for the dowels) is sitting about 3/16" above the top of the body (prior to gluing) - should be flush. Do you have a suggestion for a correction to bring the fingerboard flush w/ the top? (the neck is fitting well to the body, centered and flush).

Easy to build

If you are looking for a Kala Elite sounding uke you won't get it. But if you are after a fun project with a satisfying end product then try a kit.

My kit was missing the binding bands and plan but Stew mac sent them as soon as notified.
