When Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top called TV Jones and requested an even hotter bridge pickup that could handle his fiery riffs, Jones knew he had to take it to the next level. The Power'Tron Plus is the hottest Filter'Tron pickup they make and is perfect for everything from creamy blues, to hard-rock, to metal. It also pairs well with traditional humbuckers.
Tone/Characteristics
Designed with standard PAF magnet wire to resemble a hotter Gibson PAF Humbucker (in the 8.5k DCR range) while retaining the core Filter'Tron characteristics. The lows are tighter and more defined than a traditional Humbucker but it barks and growls generously when digging in. Lastly, it cuts through the mix really well for solos and chunky riffing.
Installation
The Universal Mount is a direct drop-in replacement for standard sized Filter'Trons—with and without "ears" or "clips". This pickup comes with two pieces of compression rubber, 2 mounting (wood) screws, and the Universal Mount Clip Pack which includes everything you will need to mount the pickups to your ring or pickguard.
Wiring Notes
This pickup is shipped with 4-conductor wire but is ready for standard 2-conductor connection. The extra red and green wires come soldered together and taped off—to split coils, send these to ground.
Splitting coils is generally not recommended for this pickup due to low coil output but some say it works well to their taste. 4-Conductor wire is also convenient for custom switching, such as pickups combined in series or parallel.
Special Considerations
Filter'Tron Replacement: The Universal Mount is a direct drop-in replacement for Vintage Filter'Trons, HS Filter'Trons, Fideli'trons, Mega'trons, Full-trons and any other standard sized 'Trons.
Mounting into a traditional humbucker rout? The EM1 Gibson-style Mounting Ring makes it as simple as swapping a normal humbucker. EM2 Gretsch-style Mounting Rings are also available for new builds or mods.
