Ovangkol, Guibourtia ehie
If you're having a hard time choosing between rosewood and mahogany on your next build Ovangkol is probably what you're looking for.

While it's technically part of the same biological family as Bubinga, Ovangkol shares many of rosewood's tonal properties, but offers a fuller midrange and brighter trebles common in mahogany.

Grown in western Africa, the trees are quite large (100' - 150') making perfectly straight grained sets easy and plentiful to acquire. The color ranges from gold to brown with strong prominent dark grain lines and occasional black leopard spots that are stunningly beautiful under finish.

Ovangkol bends and works well. It's plentiful and a good alternative to dwindling supplies of quality rosewood and genuine mahoganies. Pair it with a dark grain filler to add an even bolder visual aesthetic on the completed instrument.
