Tochi Back + Side Set - 009
An exceptional tonewood with deep roots in Japanese instrument making.
Tochi, Aesculus turbinata
Also known as Japanese Horse Chestnut, Tochi is a traditional Japanese hardwood with a long history in fine woodworking and prized as a musical instrument wood in Japan. This wood is rarely seen outside of Japan, or in modern acoustic guitars because it is extremely difficult to source commercially.
This small batch represents a truly unique find, and it is very unlikely we'll ever be able to source more. These sets are extraordinarily high figure, with tight, deep curl that is visually similar to (and in many ways better than) the best European Maple. The intense curl adds depth and movement, making these sets especially well-suited for exhibition grade instruments.
Tonally, Tochi offers a clear, balanced voice with excellent responsiveness. Its lighter density contributes to a lively, immediate attack, with a smooth midrange and controlled overtones. Builders often find it well suited to designs where articulation, clarity, and dynamic response are priorities—particularly in highly responsive acoustic guitars.
If you've been waiting for something truly exotic that won't break the bank, this is that moment. Once these are gone, we don't expect to ever see another batch of these sets.
