About This Item

Our complete set of 6 replica tuners with "bent tab" worm supports, as supplied by Kluson to guitar manufacturers from the 1930s to the '70s.

They feature authentic steel baseplates and cream plastic knobs, plus 15:1 gear ratio for better tuning than the originals.

Golden Age tuners are available exclusively from StewMac, made with our expert eye for details and exact specifications.

"People who build replica instruments or who do restoration or repair work are just going to love these."
—Frank Ford, vintage instrument repair expert

Exclusively from Stewart-MacDonald, Golden Age tuners are the rebirth of popular early 20th Century tuning machine designs, featuring simple steel plates and open gears. Replacements for the originals have long been sought by collectors and repairmen, to restore older guitars and improve their tuning. Our special relic nickel-finished versions complement vintage hardware and add an authentic look to reproduction guitars.

Relic nickel tuners have cream plastic knobs with a matte finish.
Bright nickel tuners have cream plastic knobs.

"Great tuners with the right look and feel! The only thing different about them is that they are better made and more functional."
—Richard Barnes, Pomona CA

"Superb function, aesthetics and detailing—these are clearly better made than the originals. A long-vacant niche is now filled at last."
—Paul Hostetter, luthier

I purchased the tuners for a 1947 0-18 Martin and they fit perfectly nothing had to be modified.

Great tuners

I do mostly repair work and use these tuners on restorations on guitars and mandolins like older Martins, Kays, and Silvertones. They always look great and function as they should. Great product for the price.

Excellent reproduction of the original, right down to the base plate fitting exactly over the original marks left when I removed the original mid 1940's tuners.

Replacement tuners

I bought these for an old Gibson arch top. They are reasonably priced, look nice and function well. They came with 4 less screws than required and StewMac customer service responded immediately and sent the screws promptly. Good product and great service.

Thank you!

I'll even forgive the hex bushings. Definitely better than the Klusons they replaced on my '45 D-18. Life is good again. I appreciate that the baseplate is correct and the screw hole distance is perfectly accurate. Kudos!

These are an excellent value in a guitar tuner. The tuners look great, are accurate and smooth and the price is spot on.

So-so...

I bought the relic version for an early 50s Martin.

Pros:
Hold tune well
Decent relic finish

Cons:
Tuners tend to stick or "lock' after sitting unused for a while despite lubrication.
Relic finish a tad extreme. They not only look old, they look ancient.
Buttons very smooth and blemish-free - does not seem to match amount of distressing on metal parts.
Price point

If I were to do this again, I would probably by the nickel tuners and relic them myself. I also wonder how much of the "sticking" may be due to the relic process.

Well made tuners

I use Waverly whenever a client can, but there are times that style, vintage or budget require a little more modest tuner and the Golden Age Restoration tuner is a great fit.

My preference is to get the bright nickel and age them at the shop - tarnish the metal, and add a little age to the cream plastic by softening the gloss with MicroMesh and tinting with dyes. Just enough that they look like they've been on the guitar a while.

These are well built, and I'm happy to use them, even on '50's Martins when the need arises. (bushing will require you to slightly ream the headstock holes for a chip-free fit)
