ColorTone Aerosol Guitar Lacquer, Relic
TRANSPARENT CLEAR TOP COAT
This translucent gloss is a special effect lacquer that checks very fast for a cool vintage look. For finer, more natural lines try the Golden Age effects lacquer.
Checking begins in just a few days and can be accelerated with drastic changes in temperature. In a deep freeze, the checking is long and narrow across the face of the instrument. Force freezing it with a coolant will give a more crazed look like a vintage Fender.
Finish will yellow over time depending on the environment the instrument is exposed to.
For a checked finish:
- On bare wood, prep the wood: fill the grain, sand, and apply 4-5 coats of sealer to get a totally smooth surface.
- If the body is already finished, you only need to sand and apply a thin coat of sealer.
- Apply the chosen color (optional), sanding between coats to leave the surface uniform and without imperfections.
- Apply the Relic finish in 2-3 thin coats, sanding between coats until covered.
- It can be buffed and polished before starting to break nitro.
- Cure 15 days before starting the second phase:
Relic process:
- Put the guitar 14 to -4 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -20 degrees Celsius), in 4 hour intervals.
- As soon as the guitar comes out of the cold, it will have transparent cracks, you can choose to add literal dirt or stain to cloth and wipe over the instrument, leaving only what remains inside the cracks.
- Leave the guitar at room temperature for 4 to 6 hours.
- You can repeat the cold and Relic Patina process as many times as you like. The more times you do it, the more pronounced the quarting will be, but 4 to 6 times should be enough.
