Rear Peghole Reamer

About This Item

Counterbores the back of a 5/16"-diameter peghole to fit Grover and Gotoh sealed gear housing.

Here's a tip from our luthier friend Bryan Galloup: Grover and Gotoh tuners with threaded bushings should be installed in counterbored pegholes. A snug 5/16" diameter at the top of the hole stops the bushing from leaning under string pull, thus helping to protect the lacquer finish around the bushing washers. At Bryan's suggestion, we developed this special slow-speed steel reamer that accurately counterbores the bottom of the peghole to fit the gear housing.

The reamer has a .310"-diameter (7.87mm) pilot and two flutes that cut a .397"-diameter (10.08mm) counterbore in a 5/16"-diameter (7.94mm) peghole. When the reamer's piloted end is flush with the face of the peghead, the correct counterbore depth has been reamed.

Fantastic Tool!

This is such a clever bit/reamer. I was able to enlarge tuner holes for four Squier Bullet necks in less than an hour total. The holes are perfectly aligned and super clean.

One tip: your tuning peg may have a longer 10mm shaft and may require removal of a bit more than the reamer allows. This happened with Fender Locking Tuners. Simple fix with a brad tip 10mm bit, just stop drilling when the tip encounters your wood backstop and you still have 1/8" of the 8mm hole for the bushing.

Perfect tool to install Ratio machines

My circa 1970 Yamaha FG had a tuning machine on the low E with a gear so worn that it would skip a tooth, so I decided to upgrade to Ratio tuning machines. I found a clever method to pull the old bushings out with a 10/24 flat head machine screw, a rubber O-ring, a stack of 1/2" washers, a 1/4" washer, and a 10/24 wing nut. Cheap, quick, easy, and non-marring. This rear peghole Reamer worked great. I started by using my drill press to sand the tip of a 3/8" x 2" dowel pin down to fit the existing holes in the headstock. Then I drilled a 3/8" hole in a 2 x 4 clamped to my drill press and drove the dowel peg into that hole with just 3/16" of the tip exposed. Then I chucked this rear peghole reamer. Now, the dowel peg perfectly aligned each existing hole in headstock for reaming. This tool cut cleanly and precisely with no damage to the surrounding finish, and kept the front of the hole narrow to help prevent the tuning machines from tilting under string tension.

This paid for itself the very first day! It takes all of the guess work and measuring out of drilling and installing tuners.

Used this for my new Gotoh's, worked great! Marked the depth with painters tape prior to drilling so I didn't go too deep, totally satisfied!

First time using a peghole reamer, good quality and easy to use. Was done quickly and fit the new tuners perfect.

Fast delivery the best way to prepare a Les Paul for Grover's.

Got this to re-ream some vintage bore pegholes on a new tiltback neck to accept Grover Deluxe vintage-look sealed tuners.

Mounted a piece of plywood to my drill press to act as a depth stop for the tip of the reamer. Reamer was razor sharp. Worked perfectly. The tuners fit like a glove with just enough play to go in easy but not wiggle in the hole.

After stringing it up, the tuners worked fine.

My advice to anyone using this is use a drill press and WORK SLOW a little at a time. Make sure you clamp the peghead tight to your press so it doesn't move.

Who knows if I'll ever use it for another job, but it was cheaper then buying a new custom neck!

Floyd Rose Stud hole enlarger

By

Verified Buyer

I used this tool in an unconventional way, to make the Floyd Rose studs fit. (both are 10mm) High quality tool, works far better than a drill bit if using a power drill by hand.

I'll be using this to replace some guitar tuners as well. :-)
