About This Item

Fixes the nastiest cracks!
A cracked guitar side is a difficult fix, especially when the sides of the split are uneven. Here's how to pull a crack together and glue it neatly and permanently.

1. Close the crack
Our Crack Clamp uses a guitar tuner on a smooth polyethylene base. With strong thin wire, it winches the crack shut. The polyethylene won't scratch guitars, and glue doesn't stick to it.

2. Glue a perfect wooden cleat
Something new to the world of lutherie is our hardened steel Cleat Cutter. It creates perfectly round patching cleats from any wood you choose. Each cleat has a center hole for the Crack Clamp's wire. Put glue on the cleat and tighten the crack closed for a neat, professional repair.

Pump glue into the crack
Send glue deep into the crack by using the air gun with your compressor. Gentle pressure (about 10psi) does the trick.

For very long cracks, use more than one Crack Clamp at the same time.

Complete set includes:
Crack Clamp
Cleat Cutter
Air Gun (standard 1/4" NPT thread for air hose)
Suction Cup
Pin Vise
Wire
Clamp Tie Block

Crack repair tool

My son has a really nice sounding Cordoba classical. Deep, resonant bass and mid with beautiful rose finish. Problem is, boys will be boys and a rowdy campfire jam session will raise the odds of stupid and the results thereto. Cordobas are guitars. Not bongos. Big crack running from the sound hole, under the bridge and all the way to the tail piece. And I found out that this particular Cordoba has a little, 1/2 pencil size wooden rod that runs directly under the center of the soundboard and it's located right under the Grand Canyon my boy made.

I made some "U" shaped cleats and followed the straight forward instruction video and wow! It worked! After the calamity, the guitar had no volume or depth and I was sure I'd lose both and anything else you call that wonderful sound a well made wooden classical makes. Just is what it is. Job was finished last week and my boy came over to watch the Super Bowl. I nonchalantly said "Oh, the Cordoba glue and all that ought to be cured by now." REALLY? He went over and tuned it and played a chord and did some finger stuff and then sat down and played it. He almost started crying. IT'S BACK and it sounds wonderful!!! And Imma hero!!

Very good tool(s), very good instruction videos and very happy boy who will never smack a guitar again no matter how many beers he's had! Hell, I almost started crying too! Nice job folks!

Crack Clamp Update

By

Originally I was pretty disappointed in the crack clamp and how hard it was to wind the wire on the tuner. So, this is my 2nd review in 12 hours where I eat crow as my problem was pilot error.

NOTE: I still think it is harder than it needs to be to get the tuner and wire snugged up and SM should consider drilling a vertical hole through the tuner like with a classic tuner.

That said, upon further review of the pictures on the site, I found that by pulling the wire snug, by hand, then winding only a few turns around the tuner is the ticket. Once I did that it took only minutes to cleat and clamp the crack.

So, ultimately, I really like this product!!!

More great tools from Stew-Mac!

I've owned a repair & custom shop for many years. Today I used the Crack Clamp & Air Gun for the first time today and couldn't be happier. I had glued a crack (not the centerline glue joint) on a Recording King ) 000-size guitar top. Owner came back a few months later after a long dry-spell in SoCal and it had split again almost 1/16" wide. Upon inspection I found that one of two parallel diagonal braces had popped at the crack. It's a smaller body and the brace was towards the rear so it wasn't going to be easy. After I re-hydrated the top for a week I used the crack clamp to install a cleat I made farther back (see photo). Perfect!

Then I drilled through the crack and through the brace with an .050" bit. Tomorrow I will reglue the brace by shooting glue down through that hole. Then using the crack clamp and a tie block I'll winch the brace back against the top.

Wonderful!

Just finished repairing a large crack in a PRS Hollowbody II and it was the perfect tool for getting the glue down into all of the cracks and fibers of the wood. Value to price makes it a no brainer for the shop it's a must have tool for these kinds of repairs.

Works great

Easy to use. good system for cleating.
The only thing I think that could be improved is not using a slotted string winder, just a standard one with a hole would IMO work better. Otherwise a great invention

Simple concept that works well

The tuner clamps are a must in you tool box for guitar repair. Simplifies and improves crack and ding repair on acoustics and hollow bodies. The cleat cutter is also well worth having and is a good quality cutter. Recommend having 3-4 of the clamps for large body or top crack repairs.

Airgun and suction cup damage a 3000$ Taylor!

The metal part of the tip pokes through the rubber suction cup contacting the top. When you've got glue covering the crack you can't tell that you are damaging the top until it's too late! Thanks Stew Mac for marketing this incredibly Dangerous tool. What a joke!! Buyer beware.

Great system except for the slot end tuning machines

I'm an experienced repair guy and have been using a similar set of shop-made cranks to repair cracks. This set of tools includes some great additions to my own kit and works very well once you have your process worked out and are familiar with how the setup works. However, as other reviewers have noted, the slot end tuners are very frustrating to use because it is nearly impossible to keep the wire on the shaft when tightening the clamps. I bought two clamps to add to my shop-made set, and replaced the tuners with those having a hole in the shaft. (I had to drill out the body of the new clamps to fit the new tuners.)

Once I made this modification, the set works great. The brass tie blocks are vastly superior to my old method of using ball ends from old strings to anchor the crack inside the guitar. The glue pump is great when you need to force glue inside a tight crack. The cleat cutter is great! I made enough mahogany cleats to glue many guitars in 30 minutes, they are the perfect size. And the pin vise idea to use a piece of wire is ingenious, glad I thought of it! :-P

I'd give this five stars, but the tuner issue and related correction cost more time and money, so three stars it is. Still worth getting, I used it to repair a long side crack in a vintage Martin and am very happy with the results.
