Clean fret slots before you refret a guitar neck

Dan Erlewine: One thing I know I don't want in a fret job is a fret that won't seat down because I left the slot dirty. This tool's blade is like a cross between a chisel and a scraper. The hook is very sharp, and it's thin enough to fit any fret slot. It's 19 thousandths wide. It's shaped perfectly for getting into the corners of the slots on bound fingerboards to pick up that little nub of binding that can melt into the slot when the binding's installed with a solvent glue.

This blade has backbone. If you hold it with two hands like this, you get a lot of power, and you can scrape away a lot more than dried glue. You can scrape out wood and actually deepen the slot. The blade's removable so you can replace it or sharpen it. I sharpen mine on the inside with a stone and my Dremel Tool to get the round part, and then I flatten it on a diamond stone. The handle is easy to grip and comfortable. It's the tool I use on every fret job.
