Sassafras strikes a perfect balance between the classic electric guitar tonewoods Swamp Ash and Alder. Used by Fender for the Eric Johnson Strat®, its versatility and character have earned it recognition among players and builders alike.
About Sassafras, Sassafras albidum
Sassafras has strong low-mids and punch similar to Swamp Ash with the warmth of Mahogany and Walnut. The high frequencies are clear like Alder without being harsh, giving you limitless possibilities for pickups and electronics. Builders have also praised the excellent note separation and articulation.
The weight and look are similar to Swamp Ash, with strong grainlines and a light honey color. The open pores are smaller than those seen in Ash, and grain filler should be used before applying a finish. The grainlines can be highlighted when filling and finishing for a dynamic and bold effect.
A softer tonewood, Sassafras is easy to work with and cuts, sands, and glues well. The body blanks are two pieces, joined and grain matched. They're thickness sanded and ready for bandsawing and routing in your shop.
