Wild Grain East Indian Rosewood Back + Side Set - 212

Walk on the Wild Side
Traditionally, builders have chosen straight grained, perfectly quartersawn sets for their dimensional stability and ease of use. However, in recent years we've gotten a lot of requests from builders (and their customers) for more "wild grain" options.

While our wild-grained Indian Rosewood sets are tonally similar to their straight-grained siblings, their swirly grain, and bold visual appearance can make them more challenging to build with. They need special care and handling during storage, require more stringent humidity control in your shop, and may require clamping them flat during jointing and glue up.

    Minimum Dimensions
  • Back halves: 8-1/4" x 22" x 0.155" (210mm x 559mm x 3.9mm)
  • Sides: 5" x 31-1/2" x 0.130" (127mm x 800mm x 3.3mm)
East Indian Rosewood, Dalbergia latifolia
One of the first great alternatives to Brazilian Rosewood, East Indian Rosewood is versatile, powerful, and one of the most popular tonewoods of the past 40 years. Loved by flatpickers for its volume and booming low-end growl and by fingerpickers for its sparkling highs and distinct note separation, it can at times be precisely delicate and at others unapologetically thunderous.

East Indian Rosewood works equally well by hand or by machine and it bends quite comfortably. Although it's slightly less dense than Brazilian Rosewood, it is generally more dimensionally stable and significantly less prone to cracking.

East Indian Rosewood is visually stunning as well, with hues of chocolate brown commonly found alongside hints of gold, red and purple. All of this adds up to a tonewood that is dependably workable and audibly remarkable.
