This large, incredibly hard timber is found primarily in the central African countries of Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It's dependably straight, tight grain makes Wenge an ideal choice for tonewood and gives it excellent dimensional stability.
Wenge bends with ease, although its remarkable hardness can make it a challenge to plane or sand. It tends to be oily and extremely porous—so porous, in fact, that when plates are worked down to proper thickness water-thin liquids (like cyanoacrylate) poured on one face will often exit out the other.
Although Wenge's natural, even brown color may appear plain at first glance, once finished it darkens to a rich chocolate brown with surprising depth.
Regarding tone, it offers a voice similar to Rosewood, but Wenge tends to have better projection and a livelier attack. Its low-end is well defined and strong, while trebles are brilliant and shimmering.
