I remember when these were luxury items and could be hardly found unless taken off something else. Now, I am putting these things on EVERY guitar that I have. I've found they work best for me when paired with a Floyd Rose FRX locking nut and some sort of fine tuning bridge (or even the Nutbuster fine-tuning locking nut if no tremolo). Replaced the Grover Rotomatics for these and not only does it sound great, but it looks phenomenal. looks SMOOTH.

BONUS: if you are looking for a tuner that is not going to be messed with by the kiddos, these are the BEST for not being found by little hands!

Once super rare and terribly expensive,

Verified Buyer

,,Now as easy to find as strings and reasonably priced, thanks to my buds at Stew Mac. I searched for these tuners for years to replaced sub par stock machines, but could never locate them as sets of 6. When a few would show up on the used market, the prices would be ridiculous. About 2012 I acquired a Fret-King Esprit III, which is similar to a Firebird and even has the reverse head stock. The tuners were OK, but the look was all wrong. Then around 2018 I found that Gibson was selling sets, but the price was stupid high.

STEW-MAC to the rescue! Finally, last year I found these on their site for prices well less than half what I had ever found elsewhere. On my next order I grabbed the chrome set. The ease of installation was great, but the best parts are the great look and the accuracy and stability of tuning. I can tune the Esprit III and play for days without having to re-tune. It's a player's dream! I will be buying more sets for a few of my other guitars with tuning issues Thanks folks!

The very best.

Mine came on my 2016 Firebird. String changes are quicker and they don’t slip a all. These are really great tuners.

perfect upgrade for Gibson Firebird Studio

Verified Buyer

Had issues with how closely spaced the tuners were on my Firebird Studio Tribute so I decided to bite bullet and try out these. They are awesome. They were very easy to install, and did exactly what I needed. No more smashing my fingers into the tuning knobs. The ratio on these makes it incredibly easy to accurately tune and they stay where you tune it exceptionally well.

They are super easy to load strings and tighten without any tools or needing superman levels of grip.

I can't imagine an easier string change except maybe my Autotrim Planet Waves.

Great replacement tuners on my Firebird

Verified Buyer

Decided to spring for those as the original banjo tuners on my Firebird felt very bulky & rather inaccurate. I am very pleased with the exchange results, tuning stability is improved & weight balance as well, no longer noticing top heavy effect when playing. Installation was fairly simple, following the instructions on StewMac website, finished the exhange in about 30 minutes :)

Made my 92 Gibson Firebird usable

Verified Buyer

I have owned a nice Firebird since I bought it new in 1992. I have only gigged with it once in all those years due to tuning trouble. The Gibson banjo tuners were large, heavy and substandard for accurate tuning. These new tuners have completely resolved all tuning issues and the guitar now feels balanced. I will use it at next my rehearsal and then gig. I recommend them highly and they were not available for a long period of time.

Need nothing else.

It's hard to imagine a better tuner of these!

In my experience, not really made for acoustic. But great customer service.

Verified Buyer

I've a mixed feeling for those tuners. The design is brilliant (usual for Ned Steinberger, and I bought my fair share of his products thru the years). But it does not seem to handle well the tensions of acoustic strings. On the bass strings, no problem, but on the high strings, they slip. It seems to be impossible to crush them enough to I really wanted to make those work, but no.

Now, my use is certainly not usual, so I'm *not* saying this is a bad product, OK?
It simply doesn't fit my needs, so caveat emptor.

Also, I didn't find the infos on the StewMac site very useful, given the trouble I had to make them work properly for my application.
Now, I exchange mails with Larry from customer service (who's been great, thanks Larry), and he gave me more useful tips (to no avail, but not his fault).

Perfect little gearless things!

Verified Buyer

I've been using this tuners on a custom build 7 string and they're awesome! Really easy to get used, changing strings is a walk on the park and they're stable as hell! So, when a friend of mine brought me his broken headstock Epi, I remembered this guy in here that made an "odd" repair on his SG and I went nuts! So I bought the remains and ordered a set of chrome ones...
So, thank you for the inspiration! Mo, from Vancouver! :) El roto.

Best tuning mechanism

Verified Buyer

I recently fitted a set of these tuners in my MIM Telecaster, and i have to say they work perfect. They have very good tuning stability and precision thanks to the gearless mechanism. I use .008 strings and tune up to F#. I hope they make a bass version some day.
