Understring Fret Dressing Files

About This Item

Recrown your frets with the strings on!
Now you can save time and do more accurate fretwork—all without removing the strings.

With our revolutionary Fretbar necks are leveled under exact playing conditions—even tricky necks are easy to get perfect. But we didn't just want to level with the strings on—we wanted to recrown and touch up frets too!

Better AND Faster Fret Work
These files are custom designed to work with the strings on, saving you time, and letting you work under playing conditions. They work just like a 3-Corner Fret Dressing File (one of our favorites), and the diamond coating works fast and clean, with no chattering.

With three different angles of 300-grit diamond abrasives you can reach the entire fret from ends to center. The stainless steel construction and knurled handles gives you pinpoint control to dial in the perfect shape and crown for your frets.

We like the 30 degree file for working near the edges of the fingerboard, and use the 10 and 20 degree for dialing in the middle and rest of the fret. You can also do a great job with just the 20 degree file too.

If you've ever found you missed a spot after a leveling job, these are the perfect files. You can instantly hit just the spot you need and get that fret playing great.

    Features:
  • 300-grit diamond abrasives
  • Three different angles (10, 20, 30 degrees) to reach the entire fret
  • Stainless steel construction with knurled handles
  • Works with strings on or off

Each file is 5" in length and 1/4" diameter.

Works with the strings off too
These diamond-coated files are also great all around crowning files. Used with the strings on or off, they work quickly and accurately to get frets crowned beautifully.

Save time on every fret job with the set
Now you can get a complete Understring Level + Dress Tool Set that includes the Fretbar, 3M Stikit Gold Abrasives, and Understring Fret Dressing Files. You'll do more accurate fret work on every job, and KNOW exactly how the guitar will play when you're done.

Excellent spot-dressing tool

By

Verified Buyer

I'm just a DIYer, but this tool was so handy for spot-dressing the frets on an inexpensive acoustic guitar. Found the high spots on a couple of frets easily and accurately with the StewMac fret rocker. Used a StewMac fingerboard guard to cover the fretboard and carefully filed down the high spots. No more buzz!

Great product for hard to reach spots

I dont know how many frets this can do before it needs replacing but i do know that at the horn and past it will save sooooooo many scratches that any file would cause. If you want to do under string leveling you will enjoy this tool. Dont crown with a file past the instrument horns with a file or you will scratch damage it. Use this file it does save scratches in those hard to reach places. A must have for jobs where perfection is a must as well as absolutely ZERO DAMAGE

Too Aggressive

By

Verified Buyer

I agree with C.W. Russell.

Super handy but too aggressive a grit for the task.

High spots are usually just *barely* high. This file takes off too much material.

600 or 800 would probably work better.

Very handy

I used to use a sandpaper stick for spot fret levelling, the spring kind with a concave tip. This is easier to se and you don't have to force the strings aside.

Effective Diamond File

This file works well with strings on or off the guitar. Easy to use with a smooth cutting action.

Not near as good as could be.

I have used a Japanese diamond plate product mounted on a strong but slim handle ,bamboo, made by "TsuboMan" in varying grits, for years for this task, but thought I would give these a try
and hoping these Stewart MacDonald files would excel themselves beyond those.
Unfortunately, for me, these do not,on the nature of the grit you supply as standard.I would say they are TOO abrasive for what is a delicate task, and result in too much follow up with other abrasives to reach a good shiny unmarked fret surface. Also the fretboard guard is a must.
I will endeavour to "knock the grit down somewhat" and keep them on the side as a standby.
Best regards,
C.W. Russell.
