Schatten Magnet Polarity Tester

About This Item

Refined by Les Schatten especially for guitar shops, this tester is useful for troubleshooting and testing pickups and wiring.

Pickup rewinding specialist J.M. Rolph has noted, "How many times have you wired a pickup and found it's magnetically out of phase, with the same thin, low-powered sound as a pickup that's wired out of phase, even though the lead wires looked right?" By indicating the north or south magnetic orientation of a pickup's polepieces, this polarity tester can help you avoid the problem.

With a basic knowledge of vintage pickup magnet polarities (instructions are included), this tool is also a quick way to determine a pickup's authenticity.

Expensive for how simple it is, especially when you include shipping, but it works. Very critical when mixing different pickups from different manufacturers on your guitar. Unless you like that weak, thin, nasally tone. Should have bought this a few years ago.

Took a little time to figure out how it actually worked, but when I did it was really so simple.

must-have for checking out used guitars and basses

I haven't been bitten by the pickup-making bug (yet) but this is handy for those "is it SUPPOSED to sound like that?" mysteries, especially when considering purchasing used instruments. It's not expensive and just works.

Love this almost affordable tool

Let's face it, it's a plastic tube with a little magnet in it. Is it worth $10? Yes, and no. StewMac items are often very overpriced, and this one is, too, even at a relatively low price. But it was worth $10 to me because it works well, and I find it useful. If I was a little less lazy I could have put together this same tool for less than a dollar. But I paid for the convenience and got it.

Buy this polarity tester sooner than later...

I waited to buy this, and paid the price.
Working with certain guitar pickups, that have identical hex slugs on both sides(certain DiMarzio and their Japanese 1980's copies), it is hard to know which direction, for certain, to install them into the guitar. Sometimes the guitar comes from the factory(or previous owner) with one or more pickups flipped around. Sometimes you actually want this effect...
Well, I unintentionally installed some pups backwards, and yes...it changes the sound and other dynamics. Then I had to rip the guitar apart again, so I could flip the pickups around.
-Its the last thing I want to do after a complete guitar re-build or setup...
Never again. I bought this Schatten polarity tester, and now I will know(as I go) which direction to install pickups...
