StewMac Ground Hide Glue

About This Item

The original luthiers's glue for building and repair!
Ground hide glue creates strong and repairable joints, perfect for new builds and vintage repairs.

Make strong AND repairable bonds
Joints made with hide glue are super strong—it dries rock hard and won't creep like other glues. Hide glue also transfers tone and vibration with ease. Our Ground Hide Glue is high clarity and dries clear, making crack repairs invisible. Fresh hide glue also bonds to itself, making repairs on vintage instruments much easier, no more hours spent scraping and removing stubborn old glue.

Hide glue is perfect for repairs because joints can be cleanly disassembled with heat, moisture, and a hot knife. You can remove or reposition cleats, bridges, braces, and other parts without doing damage.

Easy clean up and no waste
Unlike other glues, it's easy to clean squeeze out with just hot water—even after the glue dries. And, there's no waste! You only make as much as you need and mixed glue can be reheated for later use. The crystals won't dry out like bottled glues—you'll never waste money throwing out expired glue again.

What’s so great about hide glue?

What’s so great about hide glue? Dan Erlewine loves the stuff, and shows us why. It has to do with the hardness, and the ability to heat-and-release a glue joint, and there’s more. Dan tells it better — check it out!

Using three different glues: where and why?

Titebond or hide glue? Hot glue or bottled? Dan Erlewine uses three glues for this repair, and each has different properties. He explains why one glue can't cover all the bases. And he's created some pretty interesting cauls for clamping this job together while it dries!

A Quality Glue

Verified Buyer

This glue has really good clarity and the joined areas are tight. Easy cleanup, and easy to use. I find it helpful to warm up the wood with a heat gun to extend the work time when doing a large area. Also, if I mix up more than I'll use for the week, I'll put it in the freezer until I'm ready to use it again.
