ColorTone Retarder

About This Item

ColorTone Lacquer Retarder is a special blend of water and solvents that slow down lacquer drying times and combat the undesirable effect of “blushing” (a cloudy or foggy look in the finish caused by excessive moisture or humidity). Add just a small amount to ColorTone Guitar Lacquer to improve leveling for an even lacquer flow-out. This helps the new finish to bond with the old, eliminating witness lines.

32 oz (946ml)

Lacquer products are flammable! They cannot be shipped outside the USA nor shipped by air within the USA. Nitrocellulose lacquer products should not be used with acrylic lacquers.

Works great!

A cap full or two makes all the difference. I needed to spray a guitar when the humidity was less than ideal. The ColorTone Retarder did the trick! I was on my last color coat and was laying it down wet. The color coat tried to blush on me, but the extended drying time allowed the moisture to evaporate out and not become trapped. After 20 minutes the blush was completely gone. I was so thankful I had used the retarder!

Despite the disclaimer on the StewMac website stating nitro lacquer products must not be used with acrylic lacquer products, I have used the ColorTone retarder in TCP Global Restoration Shop Acrylic lacquer with absolutely no issues, as well as in Duplicolor Paint Shop acrylic lacquer. After all, it's a solvent and just like lacquer thinner, and this product appears to work universally with both acrylic and nitrocellulose lacquers.

Really helped flow out.

Excellent help in cool weather spraying to help flow out for a smooth finish.
As only a few drops were needed the size will last way too long though.

After watching Mamie Minch's video, I thought I'd give it a try on some horrible buckle rash. A lot was exposed wood but a lot was also just on the surface. I was very happy with the results. I just wish I could buy a smaller quantity. I now have a supply for many lifetimes.
