How To Use Guitar Repair Magnets

These powerful Guitar Repair Magnets can serve a number of different functions in the shop.

A-MAGNETS

Over the years magnets have become commonplace in shops. Magnets make inventive repair techniques possible and can assist in many duties around the shop. These are seriously strong Guitar Repair Magnets, so we've custom made handles that make picking up, positioning and separating them a whole lot easier.

Sanding the inside of a guitar

Matched sets of two align perfectly when faced together, magnetically attracting. The exterior magnet will move the magnet inside the guitar, where it's difficult for your arm to maneuver.

  • Inside the guitar, use sandpaper to smooth cracks or remove dried glue.
  • Protect the guitar's finish from scratches with some paper.

Magnets with Stikit sandpaper attached to the surface work well for removing old dried glue from an interior surface and rough spots along a repaired crack. Always use protection on the outside of the instrument when you're dragging a magnet over the surface!

A padded magnet wrapped in cloth and tied-off can be dipped in warm water, squeezed-out, and used wet. It can be drawn along a brace to clean hard-to-reach interior glue squeeze-out during a brace repair. Again, always use protection on the outside of the instrument when you're dragging a magnet over the surface!

Align cauls around cracks

Magnets can also be inlaid into a variety of custom cauls and shapes. With a top, side, or back separating them you know exactly which direction the caul is aligned on the inside of an instrument, and where it is. This is a big help in lining up such things as patches, cracks, loose braces and side struts.

These can also be used to charge up un-magnetized single coil magnets or recharge magnets that have weakened over time. It only takes a pass or two between the repair magnets to reach 25 gauss.

Our Nut and Saddle Vise makes for a sturdy charging station. Since the jaws are steel, the Guitar Repair Magnets hold themselves in place without glue. This lets you adjust for different pickups and different proximity by simply opening and closing the vise.

Warning!

Keep these magnets away from electronic equipment and pacemakers.

Use extreme care when handling these magnets since they can magnetize, degauss, or re-polarize any ferrous or magnetic material - including electric guitar pickups! Keep away from magnetic storage media such as floppy discs, cassette and video tapes, as well as pacemakers, computers, CRTs, TVs and watches.

Keep out of reach of children

If more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attach to each other and cause intestinal perforation or blockage, which can be fatal.
