ColorTone Clear Grain Filler Instructions

Directions for application

I-5577

ColorTone Clear Waterbase Grain Filler fills the pores in open-grained woods like ash, mahogany, rosewood, walnut, and koa. It produces a smooth surface and will not shrink after finish is applied. Grain Filler can be tinted with waterbased stains or pigments.

Directions

Prepare the wood:

For best results, we recommend sealing the wood with 1-2 washcoats of thinned waterbased lacquer or dewaxed shellac. If using stain on bare wood, do so before applying washcoats. Dry for 2 hours. Sand to 320-grit.

Apply grain filler:

Work liberal amounts of grain filler into the pores with a stiff bristle brush. Brush across the grain, not in the direction of the grain. Use a squeegee to remove the excess, again working across the grain.

Let dry for 45 minutes:

It is important to let the filler dry completely; otherwise, sanding will pull the filler out of the pores. When filler is dry, lightly level-sand with 320-grit. Be careful not to sand through your sealer coats into the stained wood.

Reapply grain filler:

Most porous woods require 2-3 applications for a complete fill. Let dry 45 minutes and lightly level-sand after each application.

Allow 1-2 hours drying time before applying waterbase finishes, 12 hours for solvent based finishes.

Keep out of reach of children

Keep from freezing. Do not apply below 60 F (15 C). Clean up with warm water. Do not ingest. May be harmful if swallowed. Always wear an OSHA approved dust mask when sanding.
