335-Style Electric Guitar Kit

About This Item

If you only had one guitar...
...a 335 can do anything!

You know the sound of a 335 as soon as you hear it. Clear and full or warm and thick, it's a guitar that pushed the limits of what the electric guitar could do, from the streets of Chicago to the stage at Royal Albert Hall. From rock to jazz to blues, the 335 will change the way you play, sound, and think about the guitar.

Since 1958, this semi-hollow guitar has defied convention. Designed to bridge the gap between the warm tone of fully hollow guitars and the sustain and feedback resistance of solid body guitars, the 335 excels at any musical application. And their style, with elegant curves and clean lines is undeniable.

Now anyone can build this icon on their first try. A difficult guitar to make from scratch, we've worked long and hard to finally bring you this guitar as one of our kits. We've taken out the guesswork, and this guitar is ready to build straight from the box.

Build this unique, high quality kit
You've seen countless Strat, Tele, and LP kits, but it's not everyday you see a 335, especially one that has the quality you're looking for. Building this style of guitar is nearly impossible for beginners, and very time consuming for an experienced builder. This kit is just as easy to build with our step-by-step instructions!

We've done the hardest parts—we glued the body to the center block, and routed for the pickups, f-holes, and hardware.

Each of our kits comes with the neck individually matched and fit to each body, for a perfect fit. No need to worry about getting the neck angle just right, we've dialed it in for you.

These kits come with top quality appointments, the tops are beautifully flamed, the body and fretboard are bound, with classic dot inlays.

We made sure our kit had all the details right—the routing is clean, the binding is straight, and the top is stunning. You don't need to spend hours fixing a kit before you even start to build.

First-time builder? No sweat.
You don't need a workshop, and there's a good chance you already own all the tools you'll need to get the job done. This kit comes with our step-by-step, beginner-friendly instructions and our highly knowledgeable staff of guitar techs are just a phone call away.

Excellent quality control and exemplary packaging.

Been looking for a 335 style kit and tried another vendor first because they had good reviews. The first kit had issues so they replaced it with another. The second also had serious issues and this time I got a refund.
That being said, I was a bit leery about trying this kit but it too had excellent reviews so I gave it a shot and I am very glad I did. Excellent packaging, so there was NO chance of damage, excellent quality control and excellent finishing of the bare wood and binding. There was one small issue that was taken care of promptly by SM customer service.
All in all this is an excellent kit and I’m glad I took a chance...also I knew that SM has exemplary customer service so that too was a factor in making my decision. As I always do I replaced the electronics and tuners and other items if needed. I especially wanted top quality items for the electronics since this is a 335 and access to the controls is not easy.
I definitely recommend this kit.

Best Kit Company Ever

This was my third kit from StewMac and it went together beautifully. I love the woodworking aspects and spend a lot of time on the appearance. When I got to the wiring/electronics I was stymied. My components and wiring seemed not to match up well with the directions. Wrote to StewMac for help and almost immediately heard back. Gene I. in service patiently walked me through the confusion and though I am not finished yet, I can't say enough about the quality of customer support. Hopefully I will pull it off in the end. This is my first one so I’m no expert, the kit came quickly, everything listed is there, there is not so much as a scratch on any of the wood and it seems to fit well. Information is really easy to get as well

Cherry Red 335

By

Got this for Christmas and got to work right away. This was my second kit build. It took roughly 2 months to finish using a tight schedule. I didn’t encounter any problems during the build that I couldn’t handle. There was some excess glue, but again, nothing that couldn’t be removed using high grain sandpaper. I used mineral spirits to reveal anything I missed. I originally intended to use the red mahogany but it seemed too brown when I sprayed it on the guitar, so I ordered a can of cherry. I only removed the red mahogany on the top, creating a kind of subtle burst with cherry. Spraying cherry over red mahogany made a a dark cherry color that really pops. After letting the finish cure for a couple of weeks, I assembled the guitar with a set of Parson’s street humbuckers, Mojotone CTS pots, Orange drop caps, a Gotoh bridge and Grover tuners. When finished I noticed the action was not uniform across the neck. After communicating with Stew Mac, all the relief was taken out of the neck which made some difference, the nut and saddles were slotted, but the action continued to rise all the way up the neck indicating the neck angle was slightly shallow. In fairness, this is something I should have checked at the beginning of the build, even though the instructions do not specify this step. All was not lost, however, Stew Mac offered to send me a replacement kit. I cannot say how grateful I am to them, their customer service is terrific! Shout out to Gene for helping me through this process.

Also, on parts. I knew from my first build that particularly the hardware and electronics were not the best. The tuners I received had too much play. The bridge had some play in the saddles; I did fit this bridge to the guitar when I was troubleshooting the action issue and I encountered buzz. I encountered this also on my first kit but it used an ABR style bridge with a retainer wire that could be bent and manipulated; the 335 kit came with a Nashville style bridge without a retainer wire. The electronics look like stuff from Epiphone. The pots were the small 16mm pots found in pedals, but not Alpha pots. I also received a prewired harness. Ultimately I opted to replace most of these parts; I feel like the tuners were the best replacement.

Technical Issue to be aware of

I have previously built the P model and G model kits. Now I'm tackling the 335 kit. The build of each of the kits has been extremely good, far higher than my expectations. I have a very small, and primitive, workshop and am forced to do much of my work on an outdoor bench or the dining room table. I am also a stickler for everything being right so it takes me about a year for each kit. Thank Heaven for an understanding and supportive wife. I replace most of the hardware with StewMac gear, locking tuners etc. I had planned to replace the pickups with Golden Age, Parson's Street or TV Jones but, after checking them out with a meter I was astonished at how strong they were so I have the pickups and pots from each kit. They have worked great. Now to the issue. The manuals have been upgraded but only the G manual covers this point. There are two types of Potentiometer in these kits. "A" and "B". "A" pots are Audio Taper. The "B" pots are Linear Taper. The B pots (marked B500K on the flange) are for the Tone Controls only. I won't go into the technical details. Take my word for it, Linear Pots work better for smooth and consistent Tone Control than Audio Taper. Other than that I would give these kits extremely high marks for materials, build quality and results. Take your time, do it right, and you will have an amazing custom instrument for relatively low cost.

Challenging and rewarding

By

It is exactly as expected, meaning it is a usable guitar with basic assembly using the stuff that comes in the box, but also has a lot of upgrade possibilities. Without doing anything to it, other than gluing on the neck and wiring it, it's about what you'd expect out of a 300 dollar es335 copy, but it is entirely customizable. It took a good deal of sanding. The flame top is very attractive and thicker than expected.

I replaced the control pots, wiring (used cloth push-back wire), tuners, nut, and bridge, leveled, crowned, and polished the frets, rounded the fingerboard to my liking (it is very square). I am looking at upgrading the pickups, but what it comes with isn't horrible (the neck is better than the bridge imo). I'm thinking about ripping the binding off and redoing it, just to say I did.

Basically, the neck and body are worth the cost, and the hardware that comes with it is decent enough that you can set it up and noodle between upgrades. With each upgrade, it just gets better and better. Really fun and fulfilling project kit, and you end up with a nice instrument at the end of it.

Great kit!

By

I've been playing for many years and I do my own guitar work .. mainly setups and pickup replacements etc.. I've done some woodworking and have many tools. It's a great kit. Good pandemic project for me. The instructions are written with the first time builder in mind. The finish instructions are for a very basic natural finish. You can build a very nice guitar going that route. I went a more complicated cherry finish which was a lot of work and happy with the results. The kit would be stellar if they made the veneer top a little thicker so there would be less danger of sanding throuh into the ply layer below. I had a small sand through from the factory that i didn't notice until i applied the stain. It's very small and was not worth sending it back. I did not have any glue residue on the top that others had dealt with so i was happy about that. The maple figuring is very nice. The mahogany neck is very good quality. I upgraded the electronics but I'm sure the parts shipped will do the job.
The customer service is outstanding.. All questions are quickly answered. I highly recommend

Surprise: very nice wood and workmanship. For sure, tuning pegs, pickups and most of the other hardware will be replaced by parts out of my private stock of OEM parts. This guitar shall be "my baby" ...
